Domaine Mittnacht Freres, Pinot Blanc & Auxerrois, "Terre d'Etoiles", 2006 (Alsace, France) - This was the highest percentage of Auxerrois I could find (60%). The back of the label says simply "dry, fresh, and light wine" and that about sums it up. In the background you get a faint almost undetectable hint of apple (must be the pinot blanc), and you get a faint hint of grass (must be the auxerrois). The combined result is a basic low average white wine. 5 out of 10.
Ronca, Cami, Garganega, 2007 (Italy) - We had this at a wine tasting in Boston's Italian North End several months ago and I'm just now setting down to write a review. I remember it as a fairly basic white. The back label says it actually has hints of hazelnut but I didn't pick up on that. Still, it's fairly rich and balanced and I'd call it upper average for 6 out of 10.
Dominio De Tares, Baltos, Mencia, 2005 (Spain) - We first had this a full year ago at an event at work. I'm just now reviewing it because we popped some leftovers for a recent event. This is actually a quite nice bold red with some pepper and jamminess not unlike a not overdone zinfandel. Apparently Mencia is a regional grape which is quite respected, so there's another new one for my list. Anyway, I'd score this about the same as a basic zinfandel so I'm going 6 out of 10 for upper average.
