Aires de Arosa Albarino; Conde De Valdemar Crianza; Calvet-Thunevin Cuvee Constance
Aires de Arosa, Albarino, 2005 (Rias Baixas, Spain) - The latest tried in our tasting group at work. Albarino is the leading white wine variety out of Spain. This wine is light weight, slightly acidic, and has decent flavor I think were comparable to a pinot blanc. We all enjoyed it. Yet I'd still call it average so I'm scoring it 5 out of 10.
Conde De Valdemar, Crianza, Tempranillo, 2004 (Rioja, Spain) - This was highly recommended by a store as an affordable high quality Spanish red. It was OK but it didn't have the punch or zing I'd expected. In fact a different brand I grabbed from the same store shelf and which was also recommended far outshined this one in my opinion (it was already reviewed). But I'll give this a 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Calvet-Thunevin, Cuvee Constance, 2004 (Vin de Pays de Cotes Catalanes, France) - This was highly recommended as a flavorful quality French Vin de Pays. I'll grant it has flavor but frankly it reminds me a little more of cherry cough syrup than I like. Now I've used that slam against far inferior wines in the past many of which not only tasted like cherry cough syrup but had a texture like it. Cuvee Constance isn't guilty of that - it's a decently constructed quality red. It just doesn't have a flavor that matches my preferred tastes. I'll only give it a 5 out of 10 for lower average.
