Mastroberardino Piedirosso; Vintage Ink; Four Vines Nake Chardonnay; Pierre Sparr Gewurztraminer
Mastroberardino, Lacryma Christi Del Vesuvio, Piedirosso, 2005 (Italy) - Piedirosso is a historic red grape and the name of this brand means Tears of Christ so obviously I expected a lot from this sampling. It's just OK. I'd describe it as a burnt or smoky red with a touch of bitter and some sour cherry. It's not bad it just didn't wow me. I suppose the Tears of Christ would be kind of bitter. Still it was a little different so I'll give it a 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Indelible Wines, Vintage Ink, Red Wine, 2005 (California) - The 1st glass when opened was pretty good and I was leaning to a 6 out of 10 or higher. But the 2nd and 3rd glass on later days were rather boring so it ends up with just a 5. Granted they say on the label their goal is a smooth wine and it is pretty smooth.
Four Vines, Naked Chardonnay, 2006 (Santa Barbara County, California) - I've had oaked chardonnay's I like, overoaked chardonnays which I've tolerated, and one unoaked chardonnay I hated. This brand I respect because I actually met one of the guys at a zinfandel wine tasting class so I was expecting a really flavorful and quality chardonnay. Well... it's OK. Just OK. Being "naked" I thought it would be in my face but really if I hand't known it was unoaked I'm not sure I would have figured that out. It was mild, pleasant. No it didn't have any of the vanillan flavor you get from oaking, but likewise it didn't really distinguish itself much from the cheaper box wine French Rabbit I reviewed earlier. So this is simply a 5 out of 10.
Pierre Sparr, Gewurztraminer, 2005 (Alsace, France) - I love Gewurzy, and I genuinely did like this wine, but it is such a weak version of the finer Gewurzy I tried that I really found this to be a cheap and lame version of it. Still I had not problem drinking it. 5 out of 10 for lower average.
