Charles Shaw, 2006, Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz/Chardonnay (California) - This is quite the infamous wine and it was inevitable one day our paths would cross. Called Two Buck Chuck by Californians and Three Buck Chuck in much of the rest of the country this is a really really cheap wine. To my knowledge only the Trader Joe's chain of markets distributes it and you usually fine it stacked carton upon carton all along a wall in their stores with an endless parade of buyers constantly on the grab. Before I tell you what I think let me point out countless opinions both for and against these wines can be found on the web. An excellent fun read is at: http://www.cheapwinereviews.com/charles-shaw-two-buck-chuck-cabernet . Well, what did I think? Look, IT IS WHAT IT IS. Really really cheap wine. Shockingly despite the rock bottom price it's actually tolerable. You get a mild grape juice just barely turned into wine, maybe a little like a Beaujolais Nouveau although I think you'd get more flavor in the latter. The body is very light, the flavor is there but weak, and tiny specks float in it whether from the cork or already there. But despite all that it's a really great value. It's $3 which tastes more like $5 to $8. Of course I usually don't drink any of the wines in this price range and this wine doesn't have the weight or class I've come to like. Frankly I'd rather have one of the many great Spanish wines in the $5 to $10 range than the Chuck. But I do understand why people rave about this value. On my old point scale I'd have given this a 4 out of 10 - below average but still not that bad. But on my new scale I'll simply label this a "Cheap Value" because yes it is. So it actually scores OK.
