Canella Prosecco; Robert Foley Charbono; Goats do Roam in Villages; Hecula Monastrell
1) Canella, Presecco di Conegliano, year ? (Italy) - A perfectly fine, enjoyable, economical, yet utterly boring sparkling wine. I'd read reviews saying this grape makes strictly average stuff and I'm thinking they may be right. Although Nancy really enjoyed this wine so I'm sure we'll be getting more of it. 5 out of 10 for low average.
2) Robert Foley Vineyards, Charbono, 2005 (Napa Valley, CA) - Interesting, and different from the last charbono I sampled. This had a very dark color but the light to middle weight of a pinot noir. There was definite cherry. Some hints of a tart foxiness but not enough to pose a problem. And the texture was very smooth. We sampled this in our work taste test group and all agreed it was quite good so I'm giving this a 7 out of 10 for above average.
3) Goats do Roam in Villages, 2005 (South Africa) - A tremendous story of charity is on the back label and although it's self serving it really makes you feel good about buying this wine. Taste wise this is analogous to the Goat-Roti already reviewed. It has bold fruit, tobacco, even some licorice. It's quite nice although I swear I can still tell this is an inexpensive wine which has been dressed up and well marketed. Anyway, it scores a 6 out of 10 for upper average. Definitely worth a repeat.
4) Hecula, Monastrell, 2004 (Castano, Spain) - A quite good bold wine with nice tannins which we sampled in our wine club at work. With just a brief time it opened up a lot more and probably if decanted this would be much more bold and tasty. Note that it didn't taste acidic but it tended to burn the back of the throat (maybe due in part to the 14.5% alochol). A very nice wine. 7 out of 10 for above average.
