1) Montenovo, Godello, 2005 (Valdeorras, Spain) - The latest we sampled at work. A decent upper average white with firm flavor of green apple. The bouquet had subtle hints of grass and lemon. This is the godello grape and it fit what we read about it to the letter. I'd closest compare it to the aligote grape we tried, which makes sense because it's directly beneath aligote on the grape chart we're using. And I'd say I liked godello better than aligote. 6 out of 10 for upper average.
2) Seven Sisters, Odelia, Bukettraube, 2007 (South Africa) - I had to read up on this bukettraube grape on the internet and apparently it's pretty rare (mainly Germany and South Africa) and has a very short shelf life which is why it isn't more widespread. Obviously I drank this one young the same year it was made. Both Nancy and I loved it for it's light, slightly sweet, and exotic fruity taste. I wouldn't say any particular flavor is dominant, but it's a super easy to drink and satisfying white wine. 7 out of 10 for above average.
3) Jose Maria de Fonseca, Periquita, 2004 (Portugal) - According to the label this is a classic famous blend of grapes dating back 150 years. I'm often on the look out for non-port Portuguese wines which are either single varietals or stand-out blends. So far they're hard to find in Boston. Due to it's history I hoped this one would be different, but really it's just an average wine blended beyond any dominant individual flavors. Plus the first glass of this gave me quite a headache so I suspect they put an extra dosing of sulfites in this so it would keep a long time. Anyway, it's not bad, it's just simply a lower average red, so 5 out of 10.
4) Secret de Campane, Vin de Pays de la Principaute' d'Orange, 2005 (France) - Normally I've avoided vin de pays in favor of pedigree French wines. This wine had a display sign recommending it by the store as surprisingly good for that category so I gave it a shot. Well, right they are. This wine is a blend of grenache (which I usually love), "old carignan" and cinsault. It's a fruity new world style wine. I liked it all the way to the last drop. And looking on-line I see other reviewers with the same reaction. So pick up this affordable ($10 or less) surprise wine from France. It's still average, but it's a good value. 6 out of 10 for upper average.
