Wine Drank by John Jaster
I went from tea totaler to Wine Century Club member and have tried 156 different wine grapes in three years.
Entry for September 29, 2007

1) Coturri Albarello, 2005 (Sonoma Valley, California) - This is the 2nd bottle of wine I tried from this pricier vintner ($25+).  In the first case their Charbono was surprisingly tart and fun in the 1st glass but then was actually unpleasant the next day for the 2nd.  A similar phenomenon happened with the Albarello.  I'd give it an 8 for an interesting smooth, balanced, fresh wine on the 1st glass, but it dropped to a 5 (lower average) on the 2nd day, and by the 3rd day I poured much out.  I wonder why this is happening with their wines in particular?  I think they're supposed to be an organic wine maker which relies only on naturally occuring yeasts.  However, with the Albarello I actually kept it in the fridge right after pouring the first glass and it still ended up with the same degeneration.  Well, my tip is only pop a bottle of this pricier stuff if you're going to have help drinking it all in one sitting.  Then I'm sure you'll be impressed with Coturri and have a great time.

2) J. Lohr Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 (California) - This is the 3rd wine we've tried from this maker and we really loved the first two so I hoped this would wow me with quality.  It's OK.  In fact I'd say it's upper average, probably equivalent to Kendall Jackson, so for the price range of $10 to $20 I'd say it's a value.  But I give it just a 6 for upper average.

3) Rex Goliath 47 Pound Rooster Cabernet Sauvignon, (year?)(California) - Yeah I've been seeing this in every store and the label and name are very eye catching.  Being $10 or less and having such a flash I suspected it was lame wine dressed up.  And yeah, it is.  Sorry, but I definitely taste a cheapness to this, so I'm giving it just a 4 out of 10.  But there is one ironic truth -- to make it more palatable I put two sugar cubes in the bottom of each glass and it not only made it tolerable it actually made it quite good.  It's an artificially arrived at good but it worked for me.  So despite giving it a 4 I'd actually buy this again if my funds were low and I were in the right mood.
