1) Amador Foothill, Sauvignon Blanc (80% Sauv, 20% Semillon), 2005 (Shenandoah Valley, California) - I love this winery and once again here's a wine we both enjoyed from them. Crisp, fresh, nice white wine. It doesn't stand out as much as their zinfandel but it's still a great product.
2) Castelvero, Piemonte Barbera, 2005 (Italy) - The store advertised this as a great introduction to Italian Barbera wine. They're right. Affordable ($10) yet flavorful, fresh, and with balanced acidity. Worth repeating.
3) Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel, 2005 (California) - I smile because I know the title hints this is a marketing gimmic instead of great wine. "Ancient" is a very relative term and although 80-100 year old zinfandel vines are very impressive there are many wines from vines hundreds of years old and in areas with a greater wine history than even California. Furthermore, Cline apparently sources the grapes from many places, it isn't just one ancient vineyard which they happen to own. Oh, but how was it. Good. Not great but good. It's a milder and more balanced form of old vine zinfandel, one which those who hate "big" wine flavor could probably like well enough. It's still blown away by Amador Foothill, probably by Ravenswood too. But it is good wine, don't get me wrong. And I have two other Ancient Vine bottles from Cline to try with different varietals, so we'll wait and see how they are.
