Argiolas Perdera Monica; Umani Ronchi Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi; Casalone Mariposa
Argiolas, Perdera, Isola Dei Nuraghi, 2006 (Italy) - We tried this at our wine tasting group at work. It's the Monica grape which is quite hard to find. It yields a very dark rich red which actually reminded me most of the Lagrein we tried earlier with slight hints of cherry, dark chocolate, and perhaps coffee. A quality red. 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Umani Ronchi, Verdicchio dei Castelli Di Jesi, Classico, 2006 (Italy) - Another tried at our work tasting group. We had high hopes for this because it's adjacent to several other high scoring grapes on our wine chart. Most were disappointed although honestly it wasn't bad. It had some citrus but frankly it was kind of weak and average. We're looking for a higher end sample to give the grape a second shot. 5 out of 10 for lower average.
Casalone, Dolce Mariposa, 2006 (Italy) - This is the Brachetto grape and I wasn't sure what to expect because the other Brachetto's I've had were in champagne corked bottles and this wasn't. Curiously when I pulled the hard to extract cork the end balooned out like a champagne cork so they somehow had a special (perhaps cheaper) hybrid of the two cork styles. The inside was a frothy red sweet wine with hints of raspberry and strawberry. Really this was pretty darn good and enjoyable despite costing only $15 compared to the $22 of another Brachetto brand I buy. Nancy loved it and requested more. For the price, why not? A good find. 6 out of 10 for upper average. That's a lower score than the $22 version because, hey, this one did taste cheaper, but the truth is I might as well buy the cheaper version for our home purposes because it's not that far off the quality of the pricier one.
