Chandon Brut Classic (California) - OK but the epitomy of inexpensive unremarkable California bubbly. 5 out of 10 for low average.
Novella Fine Wines, Rayons de Soleil, Muscat Canelli, Vino Farms Vineyard, 2007 (Lodi, California) - Muscat Canelli is reportedly the same grape as Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains so although I'd thought I'd found a different grape it turned out not. The bottle is a remarkably tall pointy cone and quite a sight to behold. The check-out attendant at Trader Joe's commented that it reminded him of a particular bottle of hard liquor. I didn't mind the bottle when it was just chilling in our fridge but after opened and recorked it was then too tall for the beverage shelf in our fridge and had to fit in into the door ledge instead (annoying). The wine itself is a basic muscat, actually less sweet and less complex than many other Muscat Blancs I've had, but still enjoyable. Anyway Nany really got a kick out of this and it cost less than $10 so it's still a wine worth buying. 5 out of 10 for lower average.
Chateau Saint-Florin, Sauvignon Semillon, 2008 (Bordeaux, France) - This is 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon, and 20% Muscadelle (a grape they don't list on the front of the label for some reason). Interestingly it does show some of the characteristics of each of these different grapes. It has a little grassiness from the 1st, some sweet from the second, and a bit of oddity from the third. An interesting and reasonably priced white blend. 6 out of 10 for upper average.
