Monmousseau, Vouvray Brut, Chenin Blanc (France) - A bubbly Chenin Blanc from the home of that grape - Vouvray. A $20 bottle on sale for $15 I expected a reasonably good wine. The bubbles were a bit large which often is a trademark of cheaper bubblies. The flavor was dry but not at all complex and the back label discussed honey and quince jelly and really none of that came across. Everyone at our work tasting group genuinely did like this wine it just wasn't a standout by any means and it didn't live up to my expectations. Just 5 out of 10 for lower average.
Raats Family Wines, Original, Unwooded Chenin Blanc, 2007 (South Africa) - There were many dry still wine Chenin Blancs to choose from and I went with this for our tasting group because they made a special note of being unoaked and thus displaying the true flavors of the grape, and at around $13 I thought it wouldn't be a cheap lame wine. The back label talks about old vines and flavors of pineapple, apple, and citrus. The truth is this wine had NONE of those flavors. I'd simply call it flat and slightly bitter. Although not undrinkable I wasn't aware of anyone in our tasting group who claimed they actually liked it. A big disappointment. Not undrinkable but not enjoyable either and far short of the label's claims. 4 out of 10 for below average.
