At a recent blind taste testing after work we compared 6 different cabernet sauvignons:
Altamura, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 (California) - Scoring the highest in our blind taste testing at work, this cab was rich and bold and even compared by one taster to a rich red Zinfandel. I happen to know it was a $75 sample and that's both beyond my price range and probably beyond what I'd consider a fair price for this bottle (I could see up to $50) but I'm truly grateful it was offered up for the taste testing and I'd have to admit it's probably the best cab I've had the opportunity to taste. I'd score it 8 out of 10.
Chateau Ste Michelle, Cabernet Sauvignon, Vintage 2005 (Colubmia Valley, Washingon) - In our blind taste testing at work this affordable cab actually scored 2nd place (and it wasn't even their reserve cab). Good flavor. My only complaint is I think they overoak. Anyway a really good value and I'd score it a 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Yellow Tail, Cabernet Sauvignon (no year?)(Australia) - In our blind taste testing at work this very cheap cab came in 3rd out of the dry cabs. Although some in the group thought it tasted cheap I personally was pleasantly surprised and would score it a 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Dynamite Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004 (Red Hills - Lake County, California) - A very big disappointment. Despite being a famous brand and a $20 bottle this was one of the weakest of the cabernet sauvignon's tried at our blind taste testing at work (4th place out o 6). Truly a waste of money in my opinion. You're paying for the brand name and the colorful artsty label. 5 out of 10 for lower average
Morro Bay, Split Oak Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon (California, 2006) - This was the absolute weakest of the dry cabs tried at our blind tasting at work. Not really much there to describe. 4 out of 10 for below average.
Kagor, Late Harvest Cabernet Sauvignon Dessert Wine (Modova) - Although tried at our blind cab tasting at work this was the oddball because it was the only sweet wine. Many in our group prefer dry wines over sweet so it got a harsh reaction which probably wasn't deserved. You get a pleasantly sweet cab with lots of fruit juiciness. Although not a standout of a dessert wine the whole family could enjoy it. I'd call it average for a dessert wine so 5 out of 10.
