Wine Drank by John Jaster
I went from tea totaler to Wine Century Club member and have tried 156 different wine grapes in three years.
Alice White Chardonnay, Lexia, Shiraz, and Cabernet-Merlot
Alice White, Southeastern Australia, Chardonnay 2007, Lexia 2007, Shiraz 2006, Cabernet-Merlot 2005 - This is an easy to find mass produced Australian wine priced between $8 and $10.  Despite the economical price I was quite disappointed with this label.  The Chardonnay is the best of these four samples but that isn't saying much.  It's a drinkable low average white, unremarkable, scoring a 5 out of 10.  Lexia, which we tried at work and is actually another name for the Muscat of Alexandria grape, is my next preferred.  It's a slightly sweet wine (less than you usually expect for a muscat) and had a touch of bitter but was otherwise easy to drink, and again is a 5 out of 10.  Both of the red samples had that unmistakable cheap wine taste, weight, and feel, and the Cabernet-Merlot actually turned my stomach a little.  I considered a 5 for the Shiraz but in the end give it a 4 out of 10 just like the Cab.  So if you must drink Alice White wines I'd say go for the whites and stay away from the reds.  One last curious thing, the back label of these bottles says "Imported and Bottled by Alice White, Woodbridge & Madera CA" and that careful choice and sequence of words hints to me that this isn't really a true Australian sampling.  Do they import the grapes to California and then make it?  Or do they import ready made bulk samples of wines to California where it is then dressed up in the fancier Alice White labels for better marketing?  I don't know.  But I think clearly someone is serving up cheap plonk wine.
