Wine Drank by John Jaster
I went from tea totaler to Wine Century Club member and have tried 156 different wine grapes in three years.
Entry for May 16, 2007

I'm back with two young wines recommended by Best Cellars.  And well done:

1) Crios de Susana Balbo, Rose of Malbec 2006 (Mendoza, Argentina) - This was a really nice pleasant rose'.  It's the first time to that I think the description on back of the bottle is really quite accurate: "Wines under my Crios (offspring) label display ripe fruit flavors, excellent balance, and are meant to be enjoyed in their vibrant youth.  This rose' is produced using the traditional saignee method, a bleeding of the lightly-colored juice from the skins of my fermenting old vine Malbec grapes at just the right time to create a richer, spicier wine than most other rose's from around the world, which gives this wine remarkable flexibility to pair with a wide range of foods.  And like my own crios, this Rose' of Malbec is extremely lovable and fun to be around."  Really nicely described and explained.

2) Viu Manent, Malbec, Colchagua Valley 2006 (Chile) - And this is very nice too.  A full juicy red with bold balanced flavors.  The finish isn't as long to me as the label says, but really I think this is an excellent wine.  I'll repeat this one.

What excites me after these two bottles is I had really wanted to like Malbec when I first tried it because I believed the "black wine" of history fame was extra packed with the good stuff red wine is supposed to possess.  Yet the first two bottles, one from France and one from South America, were both aged a number of years and I thought their contents were watery and not very interesting.  Now my theory is that Malbec is a much better wine to enjoy young.  The aging process knocks out much of the flavor.  I could be wrong about that but that's my theory and I'm feeling good about trying some more young Malbec's.
