The Organic Wine Works, Radical Red (no year) (California) - This was a very interesting trial. First the label is an explosion of bright colors and fonts and almost looks more like an energy or soft drink label. And the wine is not only organic but sulfite free. I've had other organic wines which came out pretty much like any other wine in their price range but when we pulled the synthetic cork on this it was quite different. You get a delightful fruity juice, not necessarily like a breakfast juice but not fully like a fruity wine either, and the juice has a very subtle effervescence like it would not have taken much more to turn this into a sparkler. The contents were very fresh and in fact refreshing and although the alcohol is present it's easy to forget this is a 12.5% alcohol wine. There were definite cherry and red fruit flavors. Really both Nancy and I enjoyed this and were eager to buy more for ourselves and to share. So far I've only seen this at the Harvest in Central Square Cambridge. I'll give this a 7 out of 10 for above average.
Nobilo, Regional Collection, Sauvignon Blanc, 2008 (Marlborough, New Zealand) - I have a high regard for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and I had the chance to try this $10 sample at a tasting at a wine store. Surprisingly for the price this Nobilo holds up against it's peers in the $15 to $20 range. I'll describe this as tart, grassy, with substantial citrus. 7 out of 10 for above average.
Barefoot, Chardonnay (no year) (California) - This is a fully average ordinary Chardonnay of no particularly unique tasting merit, BUT keep in mind Barefoot wines are 2 for $10 and what's amazing is that you can get something that tastes acceptable for just $5. But still it's just 5 out of 10 for lower average.
