Yorkville Cellars, Yorkville Highlands Cabernet Franc, 2004 (Redwood Valley, California) - I found this in a display at a store in Davis Square (Somerville) I'd never been to before. The sign claimed it was an award winning organic vineyard. I wanted to try something but it all started around $25 which is a bit out of my price range so I just picked one and went Cabernet Franc. I have to say this is fresh and fruity with hints of mint. I typically think of Franc as having some pepper but there wasn't much of that. All in all it was a smooth, enjoyable, easy drinking wine which I can give a 7 out of 10 to for above average, although I've had stronger flavors from this grape as well as more pepper in other samples.
Di Majo Norante, Aglianico, 2004 (Italy) - We tried this in our wine tasting group at work. The bouquet was interesting and I'd call it leather. The taste differed from the bouquet, I'd call it fresh and fruity and with mild tannins. This was an agreeable wine with nothing obtrusive to turn off your average wine drinker. I'd give it 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Terredora Dipaolo Viticoltori, Aglianico, 2006 (Campania, Italy) - Another sample in our wine tasting group at work. Unlike our other Aglianico sampled this one had substantial tannins and that didn't appeal to everyone in the group (I'm fine with tannins though). I definitely got some cherry flavor. I enjoyed this but I don't think it was as smooth or tasty as our other sample so I'll just give this 5 out of 10 for lower average.
