Wine Drank by John Jaster
I went from tea totaler to Wine Century Club member and have tried 156 different wine grapes in three years.
Entry for May 5, 2007

Aha, so here are two from some different places...

1) Weingut Unckrich Pfalz, Kallstadter Saumagen, Spatburgunder trocken 2005 (Germany) - I had looked in many Boston liquor stores for German reds and had never found one until now.  Sure they had German whites but it's my understanding their reds seldom make it out of the country because local demand uses them up.  And I believe there is a supply quantity issue because the colder climate forces white to be the predominate German wine.  Anyway, when I went to checkout I commented on how hard it was to find German reds and the attendant said they had actually ordered something else and the wrong shipment got delivered, so they were curious what I would think of it.  I'd have to say I thought this was OK.  I probably won't repeat it, but it wasn't disagreeable.  The spatburgunder grape is apparently pinot noir, which doesn't always agree with my stomach, but I thought they did a fine job with it.  I drank easily.  Granted this was a very young wine, although the attendant made a comment which led me to think German reds are supposed to be drunk young anyway.  Overall, I'm glad I tried this and I'm sure I'll try more German reds if I ever find any.  But it didn't wow me.

2) Casa de Santar, Dao 2003 (Portugal) - Personally I really like this (not loved but liked).  It's a classic style wine with a nice balance of smoothness, flavor, acidity.  Also it's unfiltered and I'm learning to really like that in wines.  Mentally I was adding this to the list in my head of classic wines to share with Nancy's parents, but then she told me she tried some of it and didn't like it, so there goes that.  However, I will say that for my own purposes I know I will indeed buy this again sometime in the future, both because I liked it, and I liked the thought of drinking something that came out of Portugal other than port.
