Wine Drank by John Jaster
I went from tea totaler to Wine Century Club member and have tried 156 different wine grapes in three years.
Coturri Albarello; Grand Arte Touriga Nacional; Frey Natural Red; Mondavi Private Chardonnay

Coturri, Albarello, 2006 (North Coast, California) - I reviewed a different Coturri Albarello months ago - it had a fancier label, was from a more specific region, and cost twice as much.  I scored that version an 8 - it was quite good.  This bottle is more generic, it doesn't speak at all about the organic practices of this winery, it's almost like this bottling was an after thought.  Despite that fact it's still quite good wine.  It's nicely balanced and has great red fruit flavors.  This stripped down version is still at least a 7 out of 10 for above average.  At $15 on sale it was a good value.

Grand Arte, Touriga Nacional, 2005 (Portugal) - It's hard to find single varietals of Portuguese grapes but this grape is in fact the giant of the whole wine industry in that country.  Touriga Nacional is the backbone of port blended wines.  We tried this in our tasting group at work and it was universally liked.  It's bold and fruity, has some cherry, tannins were mild.  It's happily a 6 out of 10 for upper average.

Frey, Natural Red, no year (California) - I'm pretty sure I'd seen and bought nonalcoholic versions of this brand year past and thought they were pretty lame.  This however is a real wine sample.  Costing around $10 is has some ominous signs of doom -- no year, no description of the grapes used, and the most generic appelation of all - California.  But hey it is organic and I wanted to see how it was.  The most amazing thing is they really did a pretty good job.  It's fruity but not overdone, balanced, was good all the way to the bottom of the bottle.  From a quality standpoint I'd still just give it a 5 out of 10 for lower average, but I'd have guessed in advance the score would end up lower.

Robert Mondavi, Private Selection, Chardonnay, 2007 (California Central Coast) - This is an inexpensive Chardonnay which I bought mainly to see if Nancy would like it.  As expected it's OK, there's no problem with drinking it, but it's otherwise unremarkable.  5 out of 10 for lower average.
