Viu Manent Reserva Chardonnay; Marques de Caceres White; Gallo Sonoma Reserve Cab Sauv
Viu Manent, Reserva Chardonnay, 2006 (Valle de Casablanca, Chile) - This is the 2nd wine I've tried from this brand and I'm impressed by the quality for the price (they're in the $10 to $15 range). I found this Chardonnay to be rich and buttery and easily an upper average sample. 6 out of 10.
Marques de Caceres, Rioja, Dry White Wine, 2007 (Spain) - This is the Viura grape (aka Macabeo) and I found it to have hints of melon and melon rind. It was very mild and what I'd call a functional utility wine (meaning it doesn't dazzle in any way nor does it conflict in any way). It's simply 5 out of 10 for a very low average.
Gallo, Sonoma Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 (California) - This is the 2nd Gallo I've tried and I think I've learned my lesson now. It's not that it's bad wine it's that I think it's insincere wine. They've taken relatively cheap grape juice (what would be a $5 wine) and dressed it up to bring the price over $10. The bottle and label are gorgeous, it draws you in with "Reserve" and gold medals and terrific tasting notes on the back. When you pull the composite pressed cork (cheap) you're hit with a really amazing bouquet, it seemed like it should be delicious. But the glasses were thin and boring. The bouquet from the bottle opening completely failed to eminate from a poured glass, in fact the paranoia in me makes me guess they somehow trapped that smell in the top of the bottle for that psychological impact of when the cork is pulled. The glasses drank over several days were each boring. I'm serious, this is cheap wine dressed up. And the same was true for their Pinot Noir I tried, although the Pinot had the flavor and body of a Cabernet Sauvignon, while here we have their Cabernet and it tastes like - well, not much of anything. It's a 5 out of 10 for lower average, but I was tempted to take points off for faking.
