Domaine Clos Des Rochers Auxerrois; Peter Lehmann Barossa Shiraz; Yellow & Blue Malbec
Domaine Clos Des Rochers, Auxerrois, 2006 (Luxembourg) - I was excited to try this because it not only is the first pure Auxerrois sample I'd found but it's also from a new country - Luxembourg. We tried it at our wine tasting club at work. Clearly everyone liked it. One thought $17 was too steep a price for it but personally I think due to the obscurity of the grape and the origin it was fine. I'd describe it as similar to a Pinot Blanc but much drier. I'll give it a 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Peter Lehmann, Barossa, Shiraz, 2005 (Australia) - Peter Lehmann is one of the more famous vintners in Australia and has had a hand in many other wineries' finished products. So often Australian Shiraz can be overdone, too bold, or even overmanipulated. This current sample and one I reviewed long ago from Penfields are the least guilty of that overdone complaint. I found this sample to be fresh and had an almost minty feel to the mouth, bold and not to bold, and decent flavor. But, I'll be honest, I expected a standout wine and I didn't quite get it with this one. I wouldn't say there was a complexity of rich flavors, just a freshness. I'll give it 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Yellow and Blue, Malbec, 2007 (Mendoza, Argentina) - This is an organic box wine priced around $12 from Argentina. I'd never before seen any of those features alone in a box (organic/Malbec/Argentina) and here they were altogether. Note the Blue and Yellow branding is because combined those colors make Green (get it? - it's organic). Anyway, I found this wine to be decent, a quality product through and through, however I have a hard time accepting the $12 price. It drank more like an $8 to me - had flavor but was still pretty mild, plus it came in a box, so I think this is overpriced. I'll give it a 5 out of 10 for lower average.
