Carm, Vinho Tinto, Douro, 2005 (Portugal) - This is Touriga Nactional, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Franca (standard Portugal mix). I'll also note this same brand makes quality olive oil and in fact I'm using some on salads right now. Well, as far as wine goes this is one of the pricier Portuguese imports I've found in Boston (around $20 vs. $10-$15 for most others). I expected a lot and although it's quality I don't think I'd call it better than upper average. I'd even say unremarkable. But it's a 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Cerejeiras, Vinho Regional Estremadura, 2007 (Portugal) - This is Castelao, Aragonez, and Tinta Miuda (a new one for me). It was well recommended by Best Cellars and only cost around $8. I was quite pleased. You get substantial fruit especially mild cherry, and mild tannins, and really a very nice glass of wine. Easily 6 out of 10 for upper average.
Cat's Phee on a Gooseberry Bush, East Coast Sauvignon Blanc, 2007 (New Zealand) - Of course I bought this for the name. That description is commonly applied to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc so this was a cheeky marketing gimmick. The wine itself is decent, and yes you get some cat's pee (I guess they didn't feel the censors would let the word pee be on the label so they made it phee) and you get some gooseberry, but to be honest I've had much sharper bolder flavors in New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. So this was OK but really not a shining example of what the name indicates. It's just a 5 out of 10 for lower average.
