Guidelines for Creating your Character

Home        Prelude       Characters        Maps        Game Information

Character Sheet Format
Please submit your character sheet in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. If you Do not have Excel, you can use Lotus or Word Perfect or whatever spreadsheet program you have. If you don't have a spreadsheet program then you can Email everything in plain text if necessary. If you want to use a character generating program, that is fine, but please copy that information into an Excel spreadsheet or into a word document (or email) before you send it to me.

Ability Scores
We will be using a point system to assign ability scores. You will have a total of 90 points to spend to allocate ability scores. All scores except 17 and 18 simply cost their score to assign. 17 costs 18 points, and 18 costs 20 points. So for example, assigning STR=18, DEX=17, CON=16, and INT=14 would cost you 68 points and would leave you with 22 points to divide between your last 2 attributes.
As you can see, this system will make characters with statistically higher scores than normal.. but your characters are heroes. If your character was wimpy, stupid, and clumsy he shouldn't be a hero he should sell veggies or something. These scores will be your pre-racial mod scores. Once you allocate your points, then go through and add any racial modifiers that your character is entitled to.

Race, Class, Skills, & Feats
We will be using standard races, classes, skills, & feats from the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition books. You are welcome to reference the 3rd Edition Player's Handbook, Monster Manuel, DMG, Defenders of the Faith, Masters of the Wild, Song and Silence, Sword and Fist, and Blood and Tome when you are creating your character. There are no changes specificially for Ne'khol for these sections.

Religion
We're using the standard Pantheon from Greyhawk, the one outlined in the Player's Handbook. Deity names, powers, etc.. can be confusing enough to follow so I didn't feel the desire to create a whole new one for Ne'khol. Plus many players are already familiar with the standard pantheon. Besides, if they're gods they should be able to transcend worlds so there is no reason that they wouldn't be powerful on Ne'khol as well.. right?

Equipment
Everyone will begin with 1,000 gp worth of equipment. Do not buy Armor or Primary Weapon because everyone will recieve magical armor and 1 magical weapon. You can use the Player's Handbook or any of the guides listed two paragraphs above here when choosing equipment. Some of the suppliments list specific items available for certain character classes, and you're welcome to purchase them. If there is a discrepancy between a price in the sourcebook and the price in the Player's Handbook, use the price listed in the Player's Handbook. Any gold you don't spend on equipment will be gold in-hand when you begin the game.

Magic
All arcane spell casters need to join one of the four magical orders (see the Groups link on the Game Information page for information about the four magical orders. Arcane spell casters who are not a member of one of the four orders can not legally practice magic within Lyju by royal decree. Arcane spell caster characters can choose any of the four orders, or you can choose to stay unaligned.

The other change to the magic system is that you will not need spell components to cast your arcane spells, but feel free to refer to them in roleplay if you choose.

Other than that, the spell system stays the same as outlined in the handbooks.

Magic Items
All characters will begin the game with up to 3 magic items.
Warriors, Rogues, and Rangers: You will start the game with a +2 weapon of your choice, and a +3 set of armor of your choice. Your choices must come from the Player's Handbook equipment sections (table 7-4 for weapons, and 7-5 for armor). So, if your preferred weapon is a Long Sword, you could start with a Long Sword +2, but you could not start with a "Sword of Life Stealing". Your third magic item can be any other (non-weapon and non-armor) magic item in the DMG that has a Market Price of 10,000gp or less. For instance, if you are looking for rings you could get a Ring of Animal Friendship (Market Price is listed as 9,500) but not a Ring of Protection +3 (which has a Market Price of 18,000).
The one exception to the non-armor rule for your 3rd magic item is that you could choose a +3 shield as your 3rd magic item.
You have one final option. If you would like to sacrifice your 3rd magic item, you could instead get a more powerful weapon or armor. So, if you did not get a 3rd magic item you could start with a +3 weapon or +4 armor.
Bards, Sorcerers, and Clerics: You get to choose three non-weapon and non-armor magic items from the DMG that each have a Market Price of 10,000gp or less. For instance, if you are looking for rings you could get a Ring of Animal Friendship (Market Price is listed as 9,500) but not a Ring of Protection +3 (which has a Market Price of 18,000).
You can choose to get only 2 magic items, and then you could have 1 that is valued at 20,000 or less and 1 that is valued at 10,000 or less. Or you could choose to get only 1 magic item that is valued at 30,000 or less.
If you want, you can substitue 1 weapon or 1 set of armor for 1 of your magic items using the same rules listed above for warriors. If you wanted, you could actually exchange two of your magic items for a magic weapon and magic armor (following the rules for warriors above).
Potions: In addition to the other magic items, all characters get to start the game with several potions. You will have 500 gp worth of Market Price to "buy" potions. So you could buy 1 potion of Cure Moderate Wounds (valued at 300gp), a Potion of Vision (valued at 150gp), and 1 potion of Cure Light Wounds (valued at 50gp). Or you could get 10 potions of Cure Light Wounds. Or whatever else you can get for 500gp in Market Price. Check out the DMG and have fun shopping.
Notes on Magic Item selection: No, you can not spend your regular gold to purchase more magic items. No, you can not give up potions to get more magic items. No, you can not combine all three magic items into a value of 30,000 and then get 40 things that add up to 30,000. I think I covered everything, but if you have questions then shoot me an Email.
If you don't have a DM Guide: If you don't have access to a Dungeon Master's Guide then get with me through Email and we'll select some magic items for you. Just give me an idea of what types of things you're hoping to have for your character and I'll let you know some of your options.
