We were a bit surprised when entering Paraguay by bus without getting any stamps in our passports. We had reasons to be suspicious it would turn out... The next bus, from Ciudad del Este to Encarnación, passed through a landscape that appeared more like Africa than anything we had seen so far. When arriving at our destination, we managed to find a place to stay that was amazingly cheap even if the exact amount in the paraguayan money, Guaraní, was astronomous. The town was nothing spectacular. The park was neat (see below) and the sunset behind the Paraná river was extraordinary, but mostly our experience of this town was about shopping at the big street market. Pirate copied CDs, a CD-walkman and an electric dog for my niece Engla were some high-quality stuff I could find. Shopping was fun, but we had to be a bit cultural too. The paraguay people appeared quite religious to us. I mean, people even thought that we were missionary men rather than tourists! Accordingly, it felt quite suitable to visit the 'Jesuit ruins' of Trinidad. In any case, this was the greatest (and probably only) sightseeing site in the area, so we didn't have too many choices. |
