Part 1

Joey leaned against the deck railing absently watching the people mingle in the moonlight. She had just finished her shift at the yacht club. Her last shift at the yacht club to be exact. She let out a small sigh. Tomorrow she boarded a train to Boston, and nothing would ever be familiar again. Everything was going to be different and new. Tears threatened to fall at the corner of Joey's eyes, and she wiped at them furiously. For all the times she had expressed a desire to do nothing more then get out of Capeside now that it was happening Joey almost wished she could make it stop. It was too soon.

Then again it was her last night in Capeside and she was all alone. Dawson was in California, Jen and Jack were already in Boston, Andie was in Italy, and Pacey was gone still presumably sailing around the Caribbean on his summer job. Even Bessie and Bodie were gone having had to go to Atlanta when Bodie's father fell ill a few days ago. Her last night in Capeside and all Joey had to look forward to was an empty house. She almost wished Bessie hadn't closed the B&B when she had left for Atlanta. At least then there would be guests.

Now was as good of a time to leave as any she supposed. She would have no one to say goodbye to.

A pair of arms rested on the railing next to hers, and Joey looked up meeting his blue eyes.

"It's your last night in this God forsaken town what are still doing here?" Drue asked.

Joey shrugged and looked back out to the gathering of people. She didn't want to admit to Drue she had nowhere else to go. She didn't want to admit to Drue that she was already homesick and she hadn't even left yet.

Drue continued, "Don't tell me you're actually going to miss this place?"

"Miss this place? she questioned as if the idea was ridiculous. She shook her head. There is absolutely nothing I will miss about this placeincluding you.

Drue smiled, but did not respond. They fell into silence and Joey could feel Drue's eyes on her. She should just leave, but she didn't have anywhere to go. Truth be told at least here she was around people not sitting all alone in an abandoned B&B watching old episodes of Laverne and Shirley on TV land. This was not how she wanted her last night in Capeside to be.

She thought back to the night when Dawson left. They had all gone to the movies. Well not all of them. Andie had been the first to leave. It had been the last time they were all together. Joey realized that the goodbyes had started way back then though she hadn't realized at the time that she would be the last to go with no one to say goodbye to.

Pacey had been next. The last time she saw him she hadn't realized it was goodbye, but it had been. She hadn't heard from him since, but he was still gone moving on with his life. Then Dawson left, and they had kissed goodbye. But it was goodbye.

Jen and Grams had left two week ago to move into their new apartment in Boston. Jack had gone with them. The last night they were here they had sat around Jack's house talking. That was the last goodbye because Joey would get none. All of Joey's friends were scattered all over and she was still here. It felt strange like she had been left behind and even though she had somewhere to go too, she had no send-off.

Joey looked back at Drue and was not surprised to see him watching her, but nonetheless it unnerved her the way he seemed to be studying her intently.

"What?" she asked defensively.

Drue looked away. "Nothing."

They stood at the railing not looking at each other neither having anywhere else to go, and sensing it in each other. Finally Joey pushed off from the railing. Drue's head shot up.

"You're leaving." Drue asked though it was more a statement then a question.

Joey paused as she got the distinct impression he wasn't just referring to leaving the Yacht Club at that moment. She nodded, but didn't move.

"You?" she asked.

Drue nodded. "Yeah."

"When?"

"Couple of days." Drue looked at Joey with a small smile on his face. "I'm going to Boston too."

A look of surprise crossed over Joey's face. She didn't know how she could not know that Drue was going to Boston too, and then she realized she had never asked him. She never really thought much about Drue. He was just there being annoying, but tonight Joey realized he probably had no one to say goodbye to either. It was strange but she felt a connection to Drue at the realization.

"It's weird isn't it?" Joey asked.

"What that I'm going to Boston?" Drue asked confused by her question.

Joey shook her head. "Leaving Capeside."

"Capeside was never really my home," Drue answered.

Embarrassed by her blunder Joey mumbled, "Oh yeah."

"So what are you planning to do for your last night in Capeside?"

"I um," Joey stumbled over her words trying to come up with something, but in reality she didn't even know what she was going to do. "Nothing," she finally answered.

"You have to do something."

"There's nothing for me to do, and no one for me to do it with," Joey reluctantly admitted.

A part of her wanted to ask Drue to hang out with her if for no other reason then so she wouldn't be alone. She wasn't scared to be alone, but she didn't want to be alone not tonight.

"That's where you are wrong Potter."

"What?" Joey asked confused.

Drue grabbed her hand, and started pulling her after him as he headed out of the yacht club.

"It's your last night in Capeside, and I am going to make it memorable," Drue declared as he pulled a reluctant Joey after him.

"And how do you plan to do that?" she asked as she followed him more willingly as she continued to let him hold her hand.

Drue stopped and faced Joey with a devilish grin on his face. "You'll see." Joey looked at him wearily, and he let out an exaggerated sigh. "Would you live a little?"

Joey hesitated as she weighed her options. She could go along with whatever plan he had, and with Drue there was no telling what he had planned, or she could go home to an empty house and engorge herself with junk food while feeling depressed that she was alone. It really was no choice.

"Fine, but I'm warning you I have a pretty good right cross."

"I remember," Drue replied with a wink before tugging her along and out of the yacht club to his awaiting car.

~~~
Drue ran his hand over the framed picture of Joey in her cap and gown that sat on the mantle at the empty Potter B&B. This was the first stop on their whirlwind night of fun. Not that Drue had any idea really what they were going to do. He was just planning to play it by ear, but Joey had to change first because no matter what they ended up doing her yacht club uniform would not cut it.
Drue started at the picture of Joey observing the half smile on her face. He wondered if she ever smiled for real. She never seemed to, or at least not when Drue was around. She was always scowling, or smirking, or giving that half smile that almost seemed like it pained her to do it. If anyone needed a night of fun it was Joey Potter. Drue didn't know if Joey knew what the word was.
Drue moved away from the picture and took in the rest of his surroundings. He had never set foot into Joey's house not that this surprised him. They weren't friends. They weren't anything to each other except a mutual annoyance. It was almost surreal that they were going to spend the night together.
Drue's gaze drifted to the door. He could still escape. He didn't know why he had an urge to hang out with her tonight. The last time they had spent a night together he had gotten punched in the face. He never imagined he would willingly submit to spending time with her much less that she would agree willingly. Yeah this night was going to be interesting to say the least Drue thought.
"So where to first?"
Drue turned to face Joey as she stood in the doorway to the back of the house where Drue presumed the bedrooms were. She had changed into a pair of jeans and little blue tank top. She had a black sweater draped over her right arm. Drue couldn't help but think how beautiful she was. It wasn't the first time he had such thoughts, but they were usually followed by the thought that if only she wasn't such a bitch. Tonight he stopped thinking after beautiful.
"Well I'm hungry so I thought we could get something to eat first," Drue answered swallowing hard as he tried to push thoughts of the way her tank top clung to her breasts away.
"Sounds good. I'm kind of hungry myself."
Joey walked towards Drue. If she noticed Drue's appraisal of her she didn't let on. She opened the front door and stepped out onto the porch instantly slipping on her sweater as the night air hit her bare arms. Drue followed her out not speaking as he wondered if this was such a good idea after all.
~~~

Joey picked at the hamburger in front of her. She really was hungry, but for some reason she didn't feel like eating. She looked up and saw Drue taking a bite of his own burger. Never in a million years would she have ever imagined herself sitting across from Drue Valentine and sharing a meal. Of course never in a million years would she have ever imagined the tingle of excitement and heat that ran through her when Drue was staring at her breasts back at her house. She should have punched him for it he was so obvious about it. But she hadn't. She hadn't done anything about it, but let him look.

Joey absently picked up a fry and dragged it through the mound of ketchup on the edge of her plate. She brought it up to her mouth slowly and took a bite. She felt Drue's eyes on her mouth, and instead of kicking Drue under the table she flicked her tongue out licking the edge of her mouth where a stray drop of ketchup had fallen. Drue closed his eyes and Joey smiled. She was actually having fun teasing Drue.

Drue opened his eyes and the intense blue of them startled Joey. She had never really noticed before but his eyes were mesmerizing. Joey had never really noticed how attractive he was but as she stared at him now she was overwhelmed by it.

Joey quickly looked down. She started picking at the hamburger bun on her plate pulling off little chunks and setting them on the side. She had to stop these thoughts right now. This was Drue. He was annoying, and a jerk. She was only here because she had nowhere else to gono one else to be with. She would be gone tomorrow and tonight wouldn't matter at all.

"So where are we going after this?" Joey asked the silence starting to make her uncomfortable. Maybe if they talked this tension would go away. If they talked they would probably start bickering and it would be comfortable and normal.

"I don't know wherever," Drue answered.

"You don't know?"

Drue shrugged before taking another bite of his hamburger.

"You drag me out and have no idea what we are going to do?" Joey questioned slightly annoyed.

"It wasn't like I had time to make plans."

Joey slouched into the booth. "I should have just stayed home."

Drue rolled his eyes. "Okay you want to have fun, so what is one thing you've never done?"

Joey's face scrunched up at his question. "Huh?"

"It's your last night in Capeside you should do something different."

"Well voluntarily being around you is something different," Joey shot back with a smirk. Drue chuckled and Joey continued, "Have you ever seen Breakfast at Tiffany's?"

"No, why?"

Joey leaned her elbows on the table. "Because in the movie the 2 main characters spend a day taking turns doing things they have never done."

"Such as?" Drue inquired.

"Stupid stuff like having champagne first thing in the morning, shoplifting, going to the library"

"Sounds like a hoot," Drue commented sarcastically.

Joey rolls her eyes. "I was trying to make the point that if I'm going to do things I've never done so are you."

There was an edge of challenge in her voice, and Drue couldn't help but be a little turned on by it. This game could be fun, but also dangerous.

"Okay, but I have to warn you there isn't much I haven't done."

Drue purposely leered at her, and Joey felt the familiar urge to smack him. It was comforting.

"Well think of something because you're up," Joey challenged.

The waitress approached their table. "Can I get you anything else?" she asked.

"Just the check," Drue replied.

The waitress set it on the edge of the table. "Whenever you're ready pay up front."

The waitress walked away, and Joey reached into her back pocket as Drue reached for the bill.

"I got it," Drue said as he pulled out his wallet.

"This isn't a date," Joey argued as she pulled some money from her back pocket.

"No it's not a date, but I have never paid for a girl's dinner." He paused. "Well one I wasn't planning to sleep with afterwards."

Joey looked at Drue with disgust before standing up. She shoved her money back into her pocket and walked to the front of the restaurant thankful for the reminder that Drue was a creep.
