3.02: The One Where No One's Ready

Poor Ross has a museum function to get to, but while he tries to get everyone ready to go, more and more problems keep arising -- Rachel can't decide what to wear, then Ross offends her and she refuses to go; Chandler and Joey wage war over an armchair; Monica gets a call from Richard and doesn't know what to do, and Phoebe is fine until Joey gets hummus on her dress. In a word, no one's ready.

The Joey/Chandler Plot: A Fight Only They Would Have
While Chandler's in the bathroom, Joey takes his armchair. Then when Chandler gets back, he demands that Joey surrender the chair, and Joey refuses. So begins an all-out war for access to the chair. The ridiculous nature of this fight makes it nothing to worry about, and of course, best friends always have fights like that! Everything works out in the end, and episode pulls it off in a very cute way.

Slashy
Chandler: All right, you know what? We'll both sit in the chair.
(He sits down on Joey's lap)
Joey: Fine with me.
Chandler: (shifting around) I am so comfortable.
Joey: Me too! (suggestively) In fact... I think I might be a little too comfortable...
Chandler: (jumping off his lap) All right.
While Joey goes into fits of laughter, Chandler looks very disturbed and shakes himself off a little. Okay, how slashy is that little scene right there?

Slashy
Chandler finally gets dressed for the reception, and Joey is about to go do the same when he comes back in asking where his underwear is. Chandler reveals that since Joey stole the cushions, he's wearing his underwear. As if that weren't good enough, Joey returns wearing everything Chandler owns at once, and without underwear on. He proceeds to imitate him: "I'm Chandler. Could I BE wearing any more clothes?" Then he gets into how hot and sweaty he is, and actually does lunges while Chandler watches in horror. Yes, I have a dirty mind to find this all slashy, but hey, wearing each other's underwear?

Just Cute
In the opening scene, Joey and Chandler are alone in Monica's apartment. Joey finds something that looks like apple cider in the fridge, and Chandler encourages him to drink it. When Joey realizes he just drank fat, Chandler admits that he had some too. Then they try to get Ross to drink the fat.
Later, Monica asks in puzzlement if someone's been drinking her fat. In the midst of their fighting, Joey and Chandler look at each other, and Joey makes the "shh" sign with a finger over his lips.

Just Cute
Chandler: You know what? OK. Fine. Don't get up. You just sit right there. I just hope you don't mind, y'know... my hand, right here!
(He waves his hand jerkily in front of Joey's face)
Chandler: Oh! Not touching! Can't get mad!
(This lasts until Joey swats his hand away)

Sexual Issues
Chandler comes out of the bathroom holding a Cosmo and announces to the group: "All right. I took the quiz, and it turns out I do put career before men." That's it, you just keep reaffirming that heterosexuality!

He Doesn't Love Her, Dammit!
Chandler calls Monica obsessive and crazy. Is that what you call most people you're secretly in love with and want to marry?

Overall
This is a really fun episode with lots of Joey/Chandler interaction, and although a lot of it is fighting, it's so silly that it hardly matters. In the end, Joey and Chandler have forgotten about the chair and are standing happily together watching Ross drink the fat. Factoring in the outright slashiness of Chandler sitting on Joey's lap, I'd give this episode about a 4 out of 5 on the Joey/Chandler scale.
