Applying Models of Persuasion
Lesson #8: Talking about Persuasion.
 

Instructions:

A)Use Shannon and Weaver's SMCR Model of Persuasion (source, message, channel, receiver) to label the each situation below.

B) Use Ranks Model of Persuasion to design an advertisement for the scenario provided.



Part A: Write out the answers below to each situation using the SMCR Model.

1. Talking on the phone to a friend about your sick cat.

You are the source since you are telling something.

The message is your sick cat.

Channel is the phone you are talking on.

Receiver is your friend who is listening about your cat.
 

2. Telling a teacher that you need more time for an assignment.

The student telling the teacher is the source.

Needing more time is the message

Face-to-face communication is the channel

The teacher is the receiver
 

3. Your parents ground you for something you did that they didn't like.

The parents are the source

you having done something wrong is the message

face-to-face communication is the channel

you (student) is the receiver
 

4. You are emailing a friend about a party they arent sure they want to attend.

You are the source.

that your friend should attend the party is the message.

email is the channel.

your friend is the receiver.
 

5. You are in an interview.

You, the student, is the source.

being able to handle the job is the message.

face-to-face communication is the channel.

The person giving the interview is the receiver.
 


Part B:

There is a pill that stops headaches, but this pill gives people stomachaches when taken. Another pill takes a long time to stop headaches, but there are no side affects to taking it. Pick one of the pills to advertise using the criteria listed in the instructions.
