Scientists Say Risk of Water Wars Rising

Aug 20, 2004 STOCKHOLM - The risk of wars being fought over water is rising because of explosive global population growth and widespread complacency, scientists said on Friday. "We have had oil wars," said Professor William Mitsch. "That's happened in our lifetime. Water wars are possible." Scientists at the World Water Week conference which began on Sunday in Stockholm said that ignorance and complacency were widespread in wealthier countries�

Allein in �sterreich gibt es f�r den Ausbau und die Instandhaltung bis zum Jahr 2015 bei den rund 4000 Versorgern einen Investitionsbedarf von 1,9 Mrd. Euro. Um diese gigantische Aufwendungen m�glichst gering zu halten und zudem den Betrieb der Wasserversorger effizienter zu machen besteht in der EU seit einigen Jahren hoher politischer Druck zu Liberalisierungen und zu einem st�rkeren Wettbewerb...

Asian peoples� network for water to face river linking

Aug 22, 2004 A two-day consultation of river linking ended in Dhaka yesterday with a call for the creation of a South Asian network of people for water to prevent large intervention on rivers that risk the integrity of river basins on which life, livelihood, culture and civilization depend. The consultation attended by experts and activists from India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan also called for the development of a people's database on the rivers of the region to deal with the problems of secrecy that shroud mega projects like river linking promoted by the immediate past BJP-led government in India�

National Water Policy in the Offing

August 20, 2004 GNA - The Ministry of Works and Housing (MWH) would soon come out with a National Water Policy, Dr Charles Brempong-Yeboah, Deputy Minister of Works and Housing has disclosed in Accra. Speaking at a workshop of the Policy-Monitoring and Management Support (PMMS) Component of the Water and Sanitation Sector Programme (WSSPS), Dr Brempong-Yeboah stated that under the policy, MWH would act as the policy-making and monitoring institution responsible for water issues�
