My Aero-Journey

I remember going to summer camp when I couldn't have been older than 8 or 9. This cute teen counselor was playing basketball with some guys in an older level of camp. I was running around the basketball court with my friend Caroline, we were bouncing our own basketball. Every time I'd run by him, I'd try to run smoother and faster and keep up with the ball better. When he asked me to play ball with them I was in heaven, but I refused. Don't ask why...I'm still wondering myself! (Yes, this story IS going somewhere!) His other counselor friend was on the edge of the court, and as I'd run by, I'd hear him singing. So I started singing too, figuring the main guy would be impressed if I had the same music tastes as him and his friend. The song was "Janie's Got a Gun." Then it became popular to know the words, and even though I had never heard the song I sang it over and over. Tsk tsk. Just to fit in.
Fast forward to 1997:

I was in 7th grade. I had my own little group in school, I guess we were somewhat into pop music. I liked Hanson and the BeeGees - What a weird 12 year old, huh? Most of the friends in my group liked *shudder* the Backstreet Boys. I was semi-watching the Billboard Awards with my older brother. And then these
WEIRD looking men take the stage. Could you CALL that set-up a stage? A pool, syncronized swimmers, the funny clothes the band were wearing...I just had to focus completely. After they played "Pink" I asked my brother "Who WAS that?" Still in awe of the performance I barely heard his answer as "Aerosmith."
I somewhat forgot about them. But the summer before 8th grade, I met a guy I really liked. We were incredibly close friends, almost crossing the invisible boundary...need I explain? I didn't buy "Nine Lives"...I didn't know that much about Aerosmith. So I made this friend play "Pink" for me every time we talked. I loved it and I guess I somewhat owe the level of Fanatic-ism I'm at now to him. He refused to play the song for me anymore so I got "Nine Lives" for Christmas 1998. Then I discovered the other loud, rockin' songs on the album. After seeing a live performance of "Love in an Elevator" on late night MTV (when they USED to play music after midnight) I HAD to own that song. Since I was low on cash I bought "Pump" instead of "Big Ones" and got more into the bluesy rock on the album. I was hooked. I bought all the albums and listened to them so much I had to replace a few of them cuz they got scratched up. =)
I fondly remember the summer before 9th grade as "The Summer of Aerosmith", just like I remember the summer of 1998 as "The Summer of Adam Sandler." I bought their autobiography "Walk This Way" that summer and got really into Aerosmith. It pushed away my still-into-BSB friends away. Which in turn was a good thing, they weren't real friends at all.

I saw Aerosmith play the Pyramid April 13, 1999. I was so excited about it. The only songs I knew were on the "Pump" and "Nine Lives" albums! (Those were the only ones I had at the time of the concert.) I was really only looking forward to hearing "Pink", "What it Takes" and "Falling in Love (Is So Hard On The Knees)". Steven tripped over a wire. It was right before he introduced Joe Perry to sing on "Stop Messin Around". I remember getting a feeling that the show was over. But no! Steven announced Joe from the floor and kept rockin' the whole show.
The rest is history! I'll never stop loving the Boys' music, it's just too damn great to quit listening to! And now, along with TONS of others, I'm anxiously awaiting the release of their new album "Just Push Play" along with their world tour, and I hope to catch more than one show this time around! I'm hooked!
