I invited a few of my friends to meet in the Black Hills this past summer. Boy o boy, I had no idea this many folks would show up. We had food, drink, pretty motorcycles, the works. It was great fun.
And there were bikes and people everywhere. These are views of main street, downtown Sturgis, looking north, then south. I'm on the concrete barricade waving at the camera. FUN! FUN! FUN!
Sturgis is such a popular event partially because of all the scenic cruises available. This next photo is a shot of the scenery from along the Needles Highway as you head towards Custer State Park. Photos don't do it justice.
Below is a snapshot of one of the tunnels on Iron Mountain Road. If you head to Mt. Rushmore after touring Custer State park, the tunnels will frame the faces in the distance. Needles Highway into Custer State Park / the Wild Life Loop, then Iron Mountain road between Custer State park and Mt. Rushmore is my favorite route thru the hills... car or bike.
Big biking crowds aren't limited to Sturgis. So many people attend the rally that the overflow ends up on surrounding towns. Deadwood is a popular destination as you can see from the parking lot photo below. Further proof that we do live life on the head of a pin, I bumped into one of the former owners of AaLadin on the street right next to this parking lot.
Harley Davidson commands the greatest share of the market place by a wide margin. I wish I could afford one. Perhaps by the time I hit 50! For now, my Yamaha does me just fine. I ride it to and from work every day and on short trips thru the summer. If I won the lottery, my first purchase would either be a nice big 'glide or perhaps a Honda Valkyrie as shown below. They are a nice looking bike and are supposed to ride like a dream. I just like the looks of that big horizontal 6 up front. Black with chrome just looks FINE!

Just like everything else in this world, the Sturgis motorcycle rally has several web pages dedicated to it. Big business hit the rally long ago and there are several different folks that claim to be "official" sites. I'll not get into that. Here are three sites in no particular order that have some good info on them. One Two Three
Here are two pictures of my "old" bike. '95 Yamaha Virago 750cc. I bought it second hand in 1999 and rode it for two summers. At the start of the third summer, I had a bit of a gas spill and a backfire caught the carbs on fire. Ended up totalling the bike... bummer...
This is my "new" bike. Since the picture, I've added a set of highway pegs. This is a '97 Virago 750cc with several aftermarket options installed. New pipes make it sound better, new jets in the carb make it run better. I just wish the windshield were a tad taller.
