Joel and Andy's big golf adventure 2000.
|
07/28/00 The drought is over. It's been almost a month since the last entry. Hey, we've been busy (including doing tourist stuff in Chicago) but now we're back. Today's eighteen at Blank with Andy and Ken was fun. I had a 50 on the front, 51 on the back. Andy had some of his longest drives ever on the back nine.
06/30/00 Ok, I stink at golf. Another 52 at Grand View. Par is 34, so I'm averaging a double bogey on every hole. Oh well, at least I enjoy going. I still can't believe that I go so few times every week. Perhaps next week...
06/21/00 Move over Tiger Woods! He won by 15 strokes. I won by 19 today at Grand View. Of course this is Andy's first year golfing. It's fun watching him improve. He's getting pretty good with his seven iron. Tied me on number eight. As a general rule, I get worse as I near the end of the round. Today I started out with three sevens, then got better and limped in with a 52. Go figure.
06/02/00 Party time! Andy, Kelly and I went to Blank today. It was fun. We got matched up with someone named Loren who teaches girls junior high golf in Carlisle. He seemed like a pretty nice guy. I shot another 50, with a frosty on two. Perhaps I'll never see those elusive fortys (I'm trying some reverse psychology on myself).
06/01/00 Kelly's here! He shot a 91 at Grand View and was disappointed. I would have been thrilled. I, however, am still on my quest to break 100. Today's 103 is the closest I've come. Fatigue is still a factor. 50 on the front nine, 53 on the back.
05/19/00 Back to double-bogey at Blank. Actually, one over. The big news is that I played 18 holes for the first time this year. 57 on the front nine, 52 on the back, for a total of 109. I spent a lot of time in the middle of the fairway for a change. I'm still convinced that I should be breaking 50 every nine holes that I play. I haven't been below 50 yet, but it has to be just a matter of time. I had two eights and two sevens on the front nine. The back nine had a couple of sevens, because I was starting to get tired. I can't wait until my body catches up with my new lifestyle.
05/08/00 Went to Grand View with Ken today. I shot a 52. Ken, the man, shot a 50. Congratulations Ken. This is the first time we went golfing together without ending up with the exact same score (I think he's been sandbagging). I was hoping for a five on every hole, since there are no par fives on the front nine, but I didn't make it. I am down to two sevens, though. I did OK on the first six holes, then fell apart a little bit on the last three. Four putted on number nine. I keep thinking that I should be getting 45's on a regular basis. Surely I can average a five on every hole. Stay tuned. Ken, still the man, had a beautiful tee shot on number nine. Landed it on the green, ten feet from the pin. Then he left his birdie putt short. Ken, Ken, Ken.
05/03/00 Ok. Back down to 54. Nothing over a 7. There were four of them, but nothing over. Two of 'em were on par fours. I topped my second shot on number two, which moved the ball from the middle of the fairway to behind a tree. My third shot was a beautiful drive to the top of the tree, at which point the ball took several seconds dropping more or less straight down through the tree. Number nine was another beautiful drive right down the middle of the fairway, only to be negated by a pretty, although short, shot into the middle of the pond. Had a couple of shots at par, but they didn't fall in. Hope to be around 50 again soon.
04/28/00 Oops! Shot a 59 on the back nine at Blank today. Great weather again. I just didn't shoot well.
04/18/00 Wow! What a beautiful day. 72 degrees. Winds out of the southeast at 13 mph. 10% cloud cover. AND I SHOT A 50. Five 5's, three 6's and a 7. Nothing over double-bogey. Hey, it's a milestone. I also used the same ball for the entire round, another first. Check it out on the Blank scorecard.
04/10/00 What an ordeal. Ken Nickle and I went to Blank today. When we started out it was cold and windy. After two holes, it started to drizzle. It was a cold drizzle, but we were happy to be out anyway. By the time we got to the fourth tee, it was a freezing drizzle. Didn't matter, we were just happy to be golfing. As we finished the sixth hole, the freezing drizzle stopped. It was now a cold heavy rain. We were hell-bent on finishing all nine holes. None of this "play four holes, then quit" for us. Besides, we had to walk seven, eight, and nine in order to get back to the clubhouse. Might as well play 'em. As we walked up the number nine fairway (a misnomer), a passer-by on County Line Road yelled our direction, calling us crazy. We couldn't disagree. It was, however, good to have nine holes under our belt.
04/05/00 Well, we lived through it. Our first round of golf together. Ok, it wasn't an actual round. It was only four holes, but we liked it. I chipped in on number one for a par. That's how all seasons should start out. Andy had a nine. Not bad for his first hole of golf -- ever. Waveland is one really hilly course. Some of the greens can't be seen until you get within 150 yards, so we were just guessing where to hit. It'll be nice when the course gets more familiar. After the fourth hole, we were both kind of dragging and getting thirsty, so we just quit. No sense going until we weren't having fun any more. I wanted to make sure Andy enjoyed his first time out. Next time we'll take some water along.
