Western World Literature:
Final Exam: English 232.01

Complete the essay topic as thoroughly as possible. I will grade your response based on the following criteria.

20 points. The quality of your close-reading (aesthetic analysis).

10 points. Your ability to connect the piece to important artistic movements, literary trends, and philosophies that we've studied in this class.

10 points Your ability to connect the piece to other works that we have studied in this class.

Essay Topic:

Please select at least one of the following pieces and write an aesthetic analysis that makes an assertion regarding a possible meaning of the work and supports it through textual evidence. Then show how the structure, style, content, and philosophical outlook of the piece reflects or challenges those of at least one period that we have studied in this class (neoclassical, romantic, and modern). The piece itself may or may not have come from that period.

Note: Remember, an aesthetic analysis should involve some discussion of the formal elements of literature, including point of view, figurative language (symbols, images, similes, metaphors, etc.), tone, formal structure, and diction.

Possible Bonus (if exceptional):

Add one stanza or paragraph to the work that reflects its style, tone, content, and philosophical outlook.

Note:
For this exam you should not have any materials in front of you other than the examination booklet and a pen. 1
