During the 18th century, the word "passage" was used to refer to what we now call hallways. (The word "hall" referred to the main room or dining room.) The front door and back door face each other across the passage, and in summer, they could be opened to allow cross ventilation. The high ceilings also help cool the house, and are a standard feature of Southern house construction.
