The parlor was used for more private social activities. While gentlemen guests would stay in the hall after meals for drinks and smoking, the ladies would retire to the parlor for tea and conversation.
Joel Lane would probably have had a separate room to use as an office, but currently his desk (originally owned by him) is kept in the parlor.
