The plantation could have produced all the herbs needed for cooking and medicine in an herb garden like this. Tending the garden would have been the responsibility of Mrs. Lane. It was also her duty to understand the correct uses of herbs, prepare and administer medicine, and pass on this knowledge to her daughters.
