A horn book, like this reproduction, was used to teach children to read. A sheet of paper with the alphabet and the Lord's Prayer was nailed to a piece of wood and covered by a thin sheet of horn (almost like early lamination). Most children were educated at home, and parents or older siblings would have used a horn book to teach the basics of reading.
