He then grabs the free arm of his opponent and crosses that across his opponent's neck so it lies opposite his other arm across the neck. Kurtiss then falls, taking the opponent with him and then lies on his back... he then lifts his knees up so that the opponent's back is arched and Kurtiss still has the choke applied.* 19(T)- "Canucker Splash": *Kurtiss finds his opponent in the mat, normally in the center and JK climbs the top rope. He goes up top and hits a hard frog splash into the body of his opponent.* 20(T)- "Canadian Bacon": *This is merely a reverse death valley driver, it could also serve as a set up to the "Canucker Splash"* Entrance Music : "Away" by Mercy Drive Entrance Sequence : x-JK-x :: The crowd sits pensively, waiting for something to happen and it does, greatness, my friends. As the speakers flicker to life and the TV Wall starts to tune in, suddenly we hear the start of the Canadian national anthem, as it gets to the sixth note, it cuts out and the sound instantly changes the opening chords to "Away" by Mercy Drive start and On the Best_Tron, we get a close up of the Canadian flag waving in the background and images of Joel Kurtiss applying the Kurtiss Maple Leaf, striking down with the Canucker Splash and slamming heads into the mat with the Canadian Bacon at the ramp, stands the man himself Joel The Canadian Iron Man Kurtiss. He stands at the ramp, merely smirking as the crowd reacts to him, he turns towards Ramn Perez, his Cuban manager who smirks as he lights his cigar as the crowd reacts to them with delight. On the top half, Joel Kurtiss wears nothing but a pair of black elbow pads and white wristbands, both on each arm. Naturally, the ICE Universal Heavyweight Championship hangs over his shoulder. Kurtiss also sports a pair of black and red tights, the right half is black and the left half is red. On each side we can see the JK logo, in red on the black side and black on the red side, also, cheekily written on the ass are the letters JK in a fancy Cursive font, in white lettering. Kurtiss also has on a pair of shiny black wrestling boots with black kickpads on them ( la Chris Jericho/Rob Van Dam) with Iron Man written in small white writing on them. Joel and his boots make the simple ramp go up considerably in value as he takes a few steps on his gentle saunter to the ring. He proceeds further and stands, looking at the crowd and smiling, JK then turns his focus to the ring as his manager Ramn Perez starts to talk to him, we Perez stood there in his black pinstripe suit and red tie. :: x-JK-x x-JK-x :: Our Canadian Hero stands there, and looks to the right, and then to the left. First, he taps his title with pride before he turns to the right again and raises his arms in the air, in a divine fashion, which leads to an amazing shot of red pyrotechnics, he then turns and does the same to the left side with the pyrotechnics once more shooting out, but this time in a white variety. With a smirk, Kurtiss looks around and then raises his arms up in the air, clenching his fists, standing plum in the middle of the ramp. Both fireworks shoot out once more in the air over the head of Kurtiss in a flurry of red and white and Kurtiss absorbs the reactions of the crowd. He continues to make his way steadily down the ramp. A few mouthy fans shout pleasant comments towards him, and Kurtiss looks at them, nodding his fine Canadian head. As Ramn Prez walks past, he shouts something in Spanish and slaps a few hands as the crowd cheer. Away still in the background. Kurtiss advances to the ring steps. He goes up the first, then second before standing on the top step and then turns to the crowd, raising his hands in the air, almost as if he is really God or something, as he does this pyrotechnics shoot out from the all four corners of the ring, all varied in patterns of red and white. JK then smirks at the cheering crowd and then starts to make his way into the ring. Hearing the crowds reactions, he looks at the crowd, turning around on the apron. He then carefully climbs into the ring and then gets onto the turnbuckle, and looks around. He gives a cocky smirk, and shakes his head as he looks around at the crowd. He stands up on the top turnbuckle and raises his title in the air gloriously, but not vaingloriously, of course.. Slowly, he gets down and smirks as he looks around. He points up to the title once more before turning and composing himself. :: x-JK-x Biography : *Joel Kurtiss was raised on the outskirts of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was raised in a typical nuclear family with 2 older brothers, Jeff (born 1969) and John (born 1973) and two loyal and devoted parents, Jess Kurtiss and his father Jarred Kurtiss. Jarred had taught JK a lot about life, honour, decency and more importantly, patriotism typical Canadian values. In fact, thanks to the motivation of his father, Joel had retained a lot of respect for his father Jarred and Joels ambition originally was to become a fighter pilot, just like his dad. Fortunately, for the wrestling world, this was not to be. Jarred had gone to visit an American Air Force base in a routine test of a new fighter jet. Jarred Kurtiss worked in the Canadian Air Force and was an experienced fighter pilot, a devout Canuck also. On 17th May 1989, Joel Kurtiss was 14 years old too young to hear the tragic news that his father had been killed in an aircraft accident. This accident was down to faults in US safety and maintenance the plane wasnt checked and wasnt secure and Jarred Kurtiss was instructed to fly by Americans who didnt do their job properly, Jarred was invited by the Department of Defense to visit an American Air Force base in a routine test of a new fighter jet in California. This left the family shaken, Joel more than anybody. It took him 3 years to finally get over the fact that his father had been killed by American incompetence.* *At the age of 18, Joel Kurtiss wanted to get back at American, but was more intelligent than to go destroying property. He decided there was only one way to expose the faults that Americans had, by beating them at their own game he wanted to go into a sport he enjoyed, to try and make an impact: thats right, wrestling. Fine technical wrestlers such as Ric Flair and an emerging Bret Hart influenced this way. Kurtiss wanted to cause pain to Americans all over in retaliation and decided to sign up to Stu Harts dungeon to learn the ways in which every Canadian Wrestler tries to get by. For three years, Joel put his body on the line and learned the tricks and etiquette of technical and submission wrestling. In these three years Stu Hart taught Joel Kurtiss the beginnings of a move, which the wrestling world now fears The Kurtiss Maple Leaf. Obviously this move wasnt perfected but it still was potent. At a young age, Joel was never calm at all, and at the age of 22Joel Kurtiss signed up for experience with ECCW, Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling.* *In ECCW Joel wasnt appreciated much by a contingent of American superstars, who had moved to the ECCW to try and get superiority. An American took over at this time and it meant that Joel and was pushed aside due to his beliefs, used to job people. This didnt go down well with the Canadian Iron Man and when an American superstar made fun of him in a frivolous promo, Joel Kurtiss went all out on him. Joel deviated from the showcase script and locked in a harsh and untamed Maple Leaf. This move put the wrestler out of business forever and Joel was fired from ECCW. In exile, Joel went out to focus for 2 years the focus involved him visiting the fine lands of Nova Scotia, Yukon and Newfoundland only to find the rage building up still and a feeling that he needed to prove a point. At the age of 25, Joel went back to the Dungeon and worked on his tactics. 3 years later, Joel came out having perfected the Kurtiss Maple Leaf and his submission tactics looking for employment. Touring Japan and Asia, he was scouted by Lethal All-Pro Wrestlings The Odinist and his future boss, Hugh Wildman whilst at a house show in Sapporo. Kurtiss immediately took up the offer to get onto the International circuit, he was signed up to the Chaos Complex, development federation of the internationally renowned Lethal All-Pro Wrestling.* *Here, he was unbeaten and top ranked in the short period of time that it lasted. In this federation, he captured his first championship: The All-Casino Championship. Shortly after, the federation closed and Ryan Polaris, General Manager of Slam! at the time signed him to a contract. He impressed straight away and engaged in a career which about a year with LaW and the development CC, picking up 23 wins from 37 matches, and capturing the Tradition Division, Tag Team (on two occasions), and Intercontinental titles. Here, he formed an alliance with Canadian Connection member, Christian Connolly. Both achieved tremendous tag and singles success in this team and rose through the ranks at the same time. JK had a great number of merchandise from LaW and was known for his selling power in the federation, due to his great working of feuds with superstars such as Jeff Adams, Trunks, Kenji Yamada and Inferno. However, during this time, many saw him as abandoning his original beliefs and actually dropping the Canadian Patriot gimmick. To some extent this was true, but in many federations, Joel Kurtiss has been recognized as the leading Canadian superstar, LaW was perhaps one of them. With the demise of LaW, and several unsuccessful attempts in Jeff Adams GWF (ending in a world title loss to Kenji Yamada) and Hugh Wildmans CWF, things got worse on an edition of CWF Aggression, he was taken out by The Odinist and was out of action for at least seven and a half months, in that time, JK became miserable and resentful towards wrestling, and decided it was time to take a break.* *Worse was to come... in February 2006, workers at his Canada Dry factory burnt down Joel Kurtiss precious Canada Dry factory in response to yet another pay cut. Kurtiss was shattered by this news and again, lost a lot of his revenue. In addition to this, he started to lose faith in life... things got even worse when he was ordered to do community service after beating up a man he suspected of stealing from him, he was order to do 60 hours of community service in Vancouver and was ridiculed by the wrestling community for some time. On top of that, he was abandoned by his girlfriend, Victoria Lee who left him to go back home to China and pursue a career in journalism. It is not a surprise that Kurtiss surly attitude to people influenced her decision. In this time, JK attracted the attention of a Cuban magnate by the name of Ramn Perez. He saw his decline and the rich financier decided to help Kurtiss out, believing that JK hadnt lost his sparkle. Perez also did want to legitimately make his way in American also, and through pro-wrestling, this seemed the only way to do it. After several months in Cuba, training and honing his skills with wrestlers of other diverse skills, he managed to get back that hunger, the desire to be victorious. Steadily, his charisma started to flood back also as, upon hearing this boom, Kurtiss merchandise started to sell out again. Also, being backed by a rich Latino helped. Joel Kurtiss has a great deal of anger to vent It seems he has now a worrying pleasure inflicting pain and teaching lessons in suffering rather than his previous, charismatic Canuck persona although he has not ignored the need to appeal with charisma. However, JK has made no appeal to be liked by the fans he will get the job done by whatever means necessary, and after that perhaps try to disable an opponent if hes wound up enough. Very few wrestling fans approve Kurtiss methods but many still respect him for his courage and technical ability. After a long exile, Kurtiss returned to his tag team partner, Christian Cages, International Championship Wrestling at the beginning of August 2006 he weighs a little more and hes a little more fierce, but hes still Joel Kurtiss, no matter what anyone says.* |
