| My name is Joeliz Joseph Kavalakatt, born in Tehran, Iran at 23:05 on 2nd Jun, 1980 to Joseph Lazar Kavalakatt and Grace Joseph, who were married on 10th Jun, 1979 after 14 years of courtship. I am the only child and am not a pampered son. This, is my story. Joseph Lazar Kavalakatt, generally known as K L Joseph and as Kaval among his writer friends was born in Trichur, Kerala, India on 18th Feb, 1939. Born to a wealthy royal family as the second child, he has 6 siblings. His father, Lazar Kavalakatt was a well known businessman of a chain of stores, was a founding member of a well known bank, passive politician, estate owner, strict Roman Catholic and a great father. He passed away sometime in 1965 while doing his evening rounds in his estate. Dad was the second son who took up a lot of responsibilities from his father. Being an Aquarian, he grew up to be a young, hot blooded driven man with a passion for everything he loved. He had a flair for art and literature and from young was not interested in taking up the family business, though granddad always was keen on dad taking granddad's place. Dad grew up like a regular boy in the 1940's and 50's doing all the things the "boys" did. He was a hit with the women and the local gang. Being short tempered he has had his share of fights. Given the social setting at that time, he found passion in joining the seminary and excelled in academics and sports. He joined the church, studied hard, won gold medals and came to be known as a young rebel priest, who was adored by the parishes he touched and had loads of attitude which reflected in his literary work across the state. Popularly known as "Kaval Achhan" his actions, thoughts and literature reflected on changes needed in the church at that time. He wrote novels, essays and articles both in English and the native language, Malayalam. He had a huge fan following and was regularly seen zipping on narrow roads on his 250 cc bike at breakneck speed. Then the magic began to happen. He was transferred to a little town call Karavannur which is located on the way to Irinjalakuda from Trichur. He took charge of the parish and became one of the most popular priests in the 60's. The church property, the church fields, the cemetery primarily was donated by the richest family in the region. The Paremals. The Paremals were a huge farmer family that not only dominated the region and the parish but were the ruling landlords. The Paremal patriarch had 11 children, and one of his grandsons was Varghese Paremal, who lived close to the church. A typical Roman Catholic Malayalee, he was a tall, dark and handsome man who was known to be a good hearted man and a very hardworking son. Being one of the eldest he worked in the fields with his father and educated his younger brothers. He was an active participant in all the church activities and was one of the best singers in the choir. He played the harmonium very well too. He worked hard and played hard too. He loved his liquor and many a time was known to be feared if messed around with. I have heard stories of how in his good heartedness he'd help people who took advantage of him, and when he'd come to know of him being deceived, fearlessly break the con man's doors with a machete in hand. He married a very sweet, kind hearted, practical and smart woman named Theresa. He had 7 children, the eldest being a daughter who was the prettiest in the entire Paremal Clan. Born on 02nd Sep, 1947 she was the apple of the clan's eye. She inherited her father's height, broad shoulders and singing talent. She also inherited her mom's practicality, kind heartedness and straightforwardness. Her name was Grace Varghese. As time flew and as she grew, Varghese who was a simpleton with a good heart began to lose all his property and wealth in deceitful deals which he never saw thru with relatives and the same siblings he worked hard to educate,. The family of 9 began to slowly inch towards debt, and fueling the same was Varghese's love for liquor. It fell upon the eldest daughter's duty to assist her dad to fend for the family. At a young age of 14 she began to not only assist her mom at homely chores, assist her dad on the fields, she visioned that her future was not to get married to some local chap and mother atleast 5 kids, like all the girls in the 60's were expected to do but her future was to study, earn and educate her siblings like her dad. She, I have heard from many was a dream girl as a teenager who studied and completed her graduation with help from well wishing relatives, friends and her granddad. Being the first woman, to become a post graduate and to work was a pioneering bold decision at that time. Now wonder where she got this drive and strength? Like her father she sang beautifully in the choir and was very well known in the parish. An active participant in the church, imagine her surprise when she meets an arrogant, rebellious, unconventional priest, filled with attitude whose name preceded even before he took charge of the parish. It's kind of hard to imagine, a young 20 something, bold, very pretty, popular dream girl meeting this skinny charming guy, with his intellectual glasses, intense fiery words, with guts and a lot of glory, who flew around the region on a rare 250 cc loud bike which was atleast 3 times his size. Kaval Achhan was a friend, guide and a philosopher to her who was a pillar of strength and a sensible advisor. As time flew by, Kaval Achhan began to tire down in his wars for the betterment of the church and its people against its old systems, its oligarchial heads and the prevalent disgusting politics in the church. He always had loads of supporters, but had only admirers in the rungs above him in the system. Parallel to the turn of events at work front, he worked and not only funded all his sibling's education but was the only sponsor for a long battle in court which had his family on one side versus the government, as the ruling government had taken over a large part of the family estate to build a bypass highway and had compensated the same with government set rates which was almost 1/7th the actual market value. Though the family won the battle, he was not given a share in the split of all assets of the family. His brothers had very evidently conned him. He vouched never to keep in touch with them and they were not family to him anymore. Also, he had decided to leave the role of a priest to pursue a career in literature, to be with the woman he had come to deeply love and to leave a land that had not lived to his expectations. Grace and Kaval, who had been friends for a long time, fell very deeply in love. It was admiration, respect and pure love for each other. He called her "Liza" lovingly and she called him "Etta". Very obviously, the entire Paremal clan was upset to see the apple of their eye decide to court a priest on the verge of quitting. It"s hard to imagine how different the social surroundings were in the 60"s compared to my current surroundings. From 2 very independent and successful individuals, here was a very mature couple who braved the society, the family and the church for love, for one another. The couple traveled to the bigger cities like Madras, Bombay & Delhi to pursue their dreams. God's grace and a little bit of perseverance and luck took the couple abroad to the country popularly known as Persia to the Malayalee clan of the 70's. They had courted each other for 14 long yrs and now it was time to start a family. They got married on 10th Jun, 1979 in Iran and had a dark skinned boy on 02nd Jun, 1980. Being the only dark skinned kid in the entire hospital he was visited by the entire hospital and nick named "sia kuchulu", meaning cute black baby, born to a couple who was not dark skinned. Surprisingly, it was a boon to be born dark and I become my parents pride and everybody's envy. The black boy was named Joeliz, "Joe" from Joseph and "Liz" from Liza, her pet name. So now, Joeliz Joseph K, commemoration of a simple couple's undying love is, - 5" 11.5' weighing around 70 kilos - Tall, dark and kinda handsome - Fairly intelligent and immodest - Ex casnova - And a whole lot of boastable things |
