Paul McCartney and His Basses: A Supplement to the Hofner Bass History
When We Was Fab in Germany: The Beatles 1966. Not long before the Hofners scratch plate was removed.
Paul in the Abbey Road storage room.
Paul and George recording "THE BEATLES". McCartney uses his Fender Jazz bass also restrung and used by George on the same album.
Two very clear shots of Pauls first Hofner from the "Revolution" promo film
Above, a close-up of the Hofner from the "Paperback Writer" video. At right, a nice shot from the "Night Before" sequence in the Beatles 1965 movie "HELP!"
Contrast The Beatles: John and Paul in early '63...and then in mid '66. Same legends, different guitars.
Here we actually get to see the Rickenbacker and Hofner together, ready to be used live. Unfortunately, theres no evidence Paul EVER used the Rick as a backup at a Beatles concert. The Rick, of course, became more famous as his Wings bass. Its also seen here on this page in its 'psychedelic' incarnation.
The famous 'capoed bass' photo. Actually, several shots of the Rick with a guitar capo exist from the "Revolver" sessions. When Paul was asked exactly WHY he used a contraption generally only used by guitarists, he admitted not remembering, but that it was probably just an experiment. So...what track COULD he have used this set-up on?
A rare live shot featuring BOTH Hofners. See right between Pauls knees for what became his 'backup' bass, the original Hofner.
Turnabout is fair play: while Paul pounds the skins, Ringo picks up the Hofner! Miami, 1964.
...and More to Come!!
