| You've got 450 hours of recorded material on tape in the dungeons of Abbey Road Studios. What to do, what to do...release them and make people happy and rake in the cash? (all you need is cash...)or deem the stuff of no-value and let the bootleggers keep it? Sure, no one wants an Elvis/Stones-like oversaturation of the market. But equally, after so many years, a dozen or so albums just ain't gonna be satisfying, classics or not. And some of the material may only have a niche market; but here at the end of an incredible millenium is the perfect time to supplement the audio history of the Fab Four with various song sketches, fragments, and other illusory amusement. And capitalizing on certain blabbermouths in the Beatles/Apple camp, we present the stuff that it's a good chance you'll be seeing on store shelves before...well, before we see Darth Vader again, at least.(MAYBE!) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| "The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl": Best bet. Why? Well, George Martin talks about the album in a segment of the Anthology videos, ad then we see a graphic of the L.P. cover. Why showcase an out of print album like this unless you'll be seeing it again soon? Plus, it is the only official Beatles album never released on compact disc. Further proof is that they've obviously cleaned up and re-mixed the tapes; witness the inclusion of the live "Baby's in Black" from 1965 on the "Real Love" single. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| "Get Back and 12 Other Songs": Ringo's already confirmed it's in the works. The question is, exactly which of the Glyn Johns produced albums will it be? Possibly a combo of both (and maybe a box-set, hint hint?) UPDATE: As of 2003, we've got "Let It Be..Naked", but NOT the original "Get Back" as Ringo said. And maybe we never will. |

| Re-mixed Original Albums: We've seen before, in the case of the "BBC" albums, how something is released by Apple to gauge public reaction to a future project. Could the re-mixed "Yellow Submarine" be the testing ground this time around? It does seem so, as reports say that at least the "Anthology" CD's are currently being re-mixed in 5.1 Dolby! But a wiser move on Apples' part would probably be to upgrade the packaging on existing CD's, dont'cha think? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| "The Beatles Christmas Album": Keep in mind here that Capitol Records have already stated that the Anthology project is not completed. It makes sense to assume they'd release a CD of some of the most sought-after Beatles records ever, their 1963-1969 fan club Holiday flexi-discs, under the Anthology banner. Also realize ;the Beatles are about the only MAJOR group to never Officially release a Christmas album. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What's missing from the "Anthology" L.P.'s and videos? I believe a lot can be gleaned from this as well. I realize much of the point was to get out un-bootlegged material, but so little from Shea Stadium? And NOTHING from Candlestick Park? Granted, the sound quality is not spectacular there and there is an incomplete "Long Tall Sally". But a two on one CD of these shows would be of great historical interest. Also keep in mind the following possibilities: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| *A "Let It Be" video isn't far behind. (Paul told an audience recently that HE had HIS copy!) UPDATE: Apple says the DVD has been postponed till 2004. Sure. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| *A "Sgt. Pepper's" mono anniversary box set? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| *Whither the "Real Love" video? A Beatles video compilation seems certain. UPDATE: Certain, not. But "Real Love" did appear on the Anthology DVD. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| *And remember the solo Anthology projects. George's is ready to go; Paul will soon be working on his. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| *And finally, an official, long awaited and Apple sanctioned Beatles web-site should soon be unveiled! But will it have the style and panache of The Walrus Was Crow? Well, err... UPDATE: It was, and it doesnt! |
