The 415,000 acre forest is abundant with wildlife, as well as history .The beautiful AU SABLE RIVER is the heart of the HURON NATIONAL FOREST, and also the heart of the history of the region. With many photo opportunities along its shores, in 1984 the UNITED STATES designated a 23 mile stretch of the river as a NATIONAL SCENIC RIVER.This is our favorite trip, and one we take often! All the wildlife native to MICHIGAN  resides within this forest. The MICHIGAN shore to shore hiking trail runs along a portion of the river as  it winds its way through the forest. The shore  to shore trail stretches from LAKE HURON to LAKE MICHIGAN and is open to hiking , biking, and horseback riding. camping is permitted throughout the forest with designated sites along the river including islands. Some camping is boat in only, and some is hike in only. There are also sites that can be accessed by four wheel drive or other high clearence vehicles. The average depth of the river is 1.5 to 3 feet deep. The current is gentle with no rapids or white water, making it  perfect for families. The river is also the host of THE AUSABLE RIVER INTERNATIONAL CANOE RACE the third leg of the tripple crown. The race runs in July from Grayling to Oscoda.
The AUSABLE RIVER is the host to several dams. I canoe and camp between ALCONA and LOUD, LOUD and COOKE, COOKE and FOOTE. With trips between 2 hours and 2 weeks,we can cater to any one .Is your dream to live off the land for a week in some desolate forest ? We can make that happen! Or maybe you would be happier taking a 2 hour canoe trip just relaxing while the kids float along in tubes. No probelem we can do that too! Half day, whole day, one day, two day! All hosting and guiding  is tailored to you! Use the trip estimator for A rough idea on pricing. The river was the main logging route for this area of MICHIGAN and the banks of the river still show the evidence of this in some areas, you can view rollways or skid ways where logs were  plunged down the banks from around the surrounding valley to jam the river on ther way to the awaiting saw mills. Some buildings of the area still stand along the banks as well one such building  located at LUMBERMANS MONUMENT. ( located on river road senic by-way) LUMBERMANS MONUMENT is a lasting tribute to the memory of MICHIGANS lumbermen. With many time period displays including a bronze sculpture created by Robert Aitkens in 1932. Not to far down the scenic by-way or up river is the  HARRY CURLY  canoers memorial honoring the many who have lost there lives on the mighty river. A little farther up stream is what I consider the jewel of the river IARGO SPRINGS the springs have been used continuously as a source for drinking water since pre-settlement times. It is considered a sacred place by CHIPPEWA INDIANS who believe the springs hold curative powers. It has been a meeting place or gathering place for all of time . To access from the scenic by-way, you must walk 294 steps down the hill side,  and the same back up! By canoe it is only a few steps and your there. All of the places I have mentioned are accessable by canoes. The AuSable is also a designated trout stream with exelent fishing . The wild life that we have seen along the river includes deer, beavers, bobcats, river otters, bald eagles, blue herron, trumpeter swans, and more. There are many more sites too numerous to mention on this small page. e-mail or call for further information. We are just a family wanting to help other people spend some quality time outdoors.
