| Day 1: 3/16/02 - Joe leaves home forever. Day 2: 3/17/02 - St. Patrick's Day. Everyone forgets about Joe. This is the last time he is seen. Witnesses indicate they heard him mumbling something about "Erin Florida" and "live in Appalachia". Day 3: 3/18/02 - Day after St. Patrick's Day. After recovering from hangovers, everyone realizes that Joe is really gone forever. Some cry, some laugh, most go "oh well". The JoeGAMEHike site has new pics up. Day 4: 3/19/02 - The joeGONEhike website is created to remember the missing (and make fun of him if he really does ever get back). Day 5: 3/20/02 - Raymore starts a pool for how far Joe makes it. Most don't enter because no one believes he will ever be back and therefore there is no way to know who wins. Day 6: 3/21/02 - Still no offical word from Joe. On a delayed email, Craig bets that Joe will only make it 20 miles north of his start point. Moo bets that he walks the wrong way. Day 7: 3/22/02 (courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Brian and Colleen Markley) - Mr. Markley - "The Markleys bet that Joe will make it as far as W. Virginia, at which point the National Park Service will forceably remove him from the trail because after 3 months of hiking, the smell from his feet is beginning to kill off the wildlife." Mrs. Markley - "Ye of little faith. I think he'll make it the whole way!!!!! Stinky feet and all!". Day 8: 3/23/02 - Karsten, Joe's friend from Rutgers, professes that he will quit his job and see the states like Joe. This same night Raymore sings N'Sync, professes "Dude, you didn't even know I was gay." Day 9: 3/24/02 - Joe sightings start to come in by the thousands. Joe invades the Final 4? Joe goes to Hollywood? See the sightings section for all the news. Day 10: 3/25/02 - Facing the fact that his oldest brother may never return, Cris Alaya turns to the bottle. Day 11: 3/26/02 - Joe may be as close as Ceasar's Palace in Atlantic City! See the sightings section. Day 12: 3/27/02 - Proof that Joe is alive! The JoeGameHike website has new journal entries from 3/17 and 3/18. Day 13: 3/28/02 - The JoeGameHike website has more new journal entries from 3/19 to 3/24. Day 14: 3/29/02 - Nothing new to report. Day 15: 3/30/02 - Same as yesterday. Day 16: 3/31/02 - Joe spends Easter in the woods. Today marks 2 weeks. Day 17: 4/1/02 - Joe is coming back! In an early morning call from Joe, he indicated that he was having some serious problems with his Achilles acting up and that it was causing him to be unable walk well. He has decided to come back heal up, and possibly resume from where he left at a later date. Will provide more details when available. (OK I lie. Thats the point of the day.) Day 18: 4/2/02 - With the help of his genius co-worker Jess, Joe's younger brother Cris has assessed Joe's current travels and estimates that Joe will return on August 13th. Day 19: 4/3/02 - Rumor has it that Joe sent up a role of pictures to be developed and put up on his website. Keep an eye out for them. Day 20: 4/4/02 - Still no pictures posted. Is Joe still alive? Day 21: 4/5/02 - Joe IS alive! In a call today he indicated that he is currently in Hot Springs, NC. 270 miles traveled so far - 1838.5 left to go. In the past few days he has done 25 - 30 miles a day. Day 22: 4/6/02 - A new section added -"Guest Commentaries", with the first one by Joe's younger brother Cris. Day 23: 4/7/02 - Evidently the Alaya family does not know how to get pictures developed. I swear, those pics I talked about, they're coming. Day 24: 4/8/02 - This time without the genius co-worker, based on his travels so far, I calculate Joe's return at August 13th (again). Keep in mind before leaving Joe indicated that he would be done on July 5th. Day 25: 4/9/02 - JoeGameHike has new Journal entries and pictures up. Joe looks pretty dirty. Day 26: 4/10/02 - Another Joe sighting! Day 27: 4/11/02 - JoeGameHike site should have a whole week of new journal entries up in a few days. Day 28: 4/12/02 - Those journals are up. 7 of em from 3/29 to 4/4. Day 29: 4/13/02 - Today marks 4 weeks that Joe has been gone. Day 30: 4/14/02 - Sunday. Nothing. Day 31: 4/15/02 - Got a call from Joe at like 6:30 PM. He's in Demascus, Virginia. It's 455 miles into the trail. Says he's doing good and he expects to pick up the pace soon. Sent out 10 days of journals and another role of film today. May be online tomorrow. Day 32: 4/16/02 - Joe's hike is over as today the IRS blanketed the woods of western Virginia in attempt to arrest Joe for failuer to pay his taxes. Day 33: 4/17/02 - Today I learned that Joe must have it tough in the woods. I came back to my office to find one pretty pissed of bird sitting on my PC. Must have gotten in through construction being done on the roof. Lil bastard tried to poke my eyes out. Damn wildlife. Day 34: 4/18/02 - Expect some more journals and pictures up during the weekend. Day 35: 4/19/02 - Joe called around 4PM today. Said that he was at a truck stop on route 81. Seems to be around Groseclose, VA and should be in Pearisburg, VA (his next mail stop) by Tuesday or Wednesday. Also said to be on the lookout for an interesting journal entry regarding him and a few bolts of lightening on top of a bald mountain. Day 36: 4/20/02 - 1 new journal entry up on JoeGameHike. Day 37: 4/21/02 - "I will hunt Joe Alaya down!" Day 38: 4/22/02 - More journal entries up through 4/9. Day 39: 4/23/02 - 1 journal entries up for 4/10. Day 40: 4/24/02 - Expect new pictures up shortly. Day 41: 4/25/02 - More journals up (like 5 days), but still no pictures. Further evidence regarding my comment in Day 23. Day 42: 4/26/02 - Friday. Woo hoo. Day 43: 4/27/02 - JoeGameHike has a ton of new pictures up. Joe's got the grizzly look going on (as seen from his infatuation with taking pictures of himself). Day 44: 4/28/02 - Talked to Joe today for like 15 minutes. He was staying in a hotel for his first night on the trip so far. Had to stick around in his current town to wait for his maildrop b/c the post office was closed and there was no camping in the area b/c it was a wildlife reserve area. Another new commentary added. Day 45: 4/29/02 - Future of Joe? Day 46: 4/30/02 - Another aerial joe sighting. Day 47: 5/1/02 - Joe talked about small towns and how they are crazy. Here's an example. Day 48: 5/2/02 - Running a little low on subject matter. I guess there is only so long you can talk about a walk in the woods. Any suggestions for things/people to make fun of? Days 49 to 57: 5/3/02 - 5/11/02 - No word from Joe at all except for one small email that shows he has gone off the deep end. Referring to yourself as Jersey Joe now in all correspondence, eh Joe? Day 58: 5/12/02 - Joe calls home for Mother's Day. Says he is 991 miles in and PISSED because his brothers haven't put up a months worth of journals yet. Trust me, there will be something up soon. Day 59: 5/13/02 - Based on the trip so far, Joe is averaging about 17.5 miles a day. At that pace, 65 days left to go with a finish date of July 16th! |

| 4/6/02 - "Joe Sighting" by Cris Alaya "April 5th....for a brief time, Joe signs onto the internet. He checks his email and chats with family and friends over instant messenger but soon gets bombarded with stupid questions and realizes why he decided to cut off communication in the first place. The last straw is when his older sister Ana opens up a chat room and invites the whole family in.
