I love building the chrome kits. They are tough to put together, but they are a challenge. Lots of scraping and sanding and all, but at the same time, you don't have to worry about seams, or painting either. When complete, they look, to me anyways, like a trophy piece. Which is appropriate considering they are limited edition, and to find them is like going on a hunt. But lucky enough, my local hobby store had both the Chrome Robby the Robot and the Chrome Jupiter 2, both from Polar Lights. With only 5,000 distributed of each, they are a find.
The first time I ever saw Robby was in the Lost in Space episode, "War of the Robots." I have always been a fan of his, but to me, despite him being created for Forbidden Planet, his original appearance to me is with that "robotoid" chest plate. I feel honored to have taken part in helping to get Robby released with the alternate chest plate. When they announced the release of the kit, Dave Metzner on the PL Message Board said they didn't have quality close ups of the plate for tooling. I love a challenge, so I pulled out my Lost in Space tapes and hooked up my VCR to my Snappy on my computer and spent HOURS searching for quality pics of the plate. I came up with quite a few and e-mailed them to Dave. To my surprise he e-mailed me back thanking me for the pics and said "These are exactly what I am looking for." He gave me his phone number and on the phone he told me that he forwarded them to those who are tooling the kit. And providing licensing was not a problem, the alternate plate will be included. Well, imagine my thrill when I opened the kit, and there it was. Friends of mine have said "Gee, you think for all your hard work, they would have sent you a kit as thanks..." Maybe so...but it's hard to explain that seeing it in the kit was an honor in itself.
ROBBY THE ROBOT
Needless to say, I have built four Robby kits since it's release, and all but one I built as the robotoid, or the Prison Guard from another Lost in Space appearance. I had to build at least ONE as Robby. I hope to showcase them on a seperate page soon.
"Here now is the JUPITER 2"
Once again, Polar Lights comes out with a fantastic kit. For years us Lost in Space fans have wanted a good, styrene kit of the Robinson's Space Ship. It took nearly 30 years, but finally a company heard the screams of the fans and put one out. A great kit in it's normal version, but the Chrome Jupiter 2 is even cooler. Once again, it sits on my shelf like a trophy proudly displayed. On most kits, if you don't paint them, it detracts from the look of the model. Not in this case. The chrome enhances details and looks great, without using any paint (except for the fusion core, freeze tube tops and bottoms and the elevator).
