The Ottawa Citizen January 27, 1998, Tuesday, FINAL EDITION SECTION: NEWS; LETTERS; Pg. A16 LENGTH: 228 words HEADLINE: Made it easy for children to explore anime BYLINE: M. RICHARDSON; THE OTTAWA CITIZEN BODY: I am appalled at the Citizen's lack of sensitivity and good taste in depicting a somewhat titillating picture (and a web site address immediately below it) as an inducement to read your accompanying article ("Don't paint all Japanese anime with same sex-violence brush," Jan. 22). The Citizen is supposed to be a family oriented newspaper. While your newspaper has an undeniable right to publish the news, was it really necessary to select this picture and web site address to accent it? Surely the Citizen could have found a more tasteful depiction. Your newspaper is supposedly read by all members of the family. What child, upon seeing this particular picture, would not be tempted to explore the situation further? You have even provided the web site address to make the task easier. The web site owners must be laughing all the way to the bank. Was it your intention to deliberately promote the pornography site to children? If you bothered to check out the site location you so casually provided, you would have found that, after three clicks of the mouse, you have entered an area that is clearly not suitable for children to be browsing through. Does your newspaper care? I begin to doubt it. You are so pre-occupied in selling newspapers at any cost, that you have set aside your journalistic integrity. M. Richardson, Ottawa
