I stand upon a balcony
And watch the evening's revelry
A scene played many times before
Upon the dusty wooden floor.
The ghosts are dancing life away
Accompanied by yesterday
A tuneless piano plays the song
Inviting me to sing along.
The song is older than the sun
The words are known to everyone
But by the time tonight is through
The song will once again be new.
The ghosts are calling out to me
They say I know where I should be
I go downstairs, open the door
And take my place upon the floor
For them and me, we're all the same
Refugees without a name
Outside time and inside too
Where new is old and old is new.
We rise, we fall, we live, we die
And none of us remember why
The song continues, on it plays
Through sunny nights and darkened days.
It never alters, never ceases
Dance until you fall to pieces
The evening sun, the morning moon
As changeless as this endless tune.
A new day dawns, it calls me back
It chains me to a railroad track
I cannot move, I cannot see
The train as it bears down on me.
Imaginary walls collapse
A neuron fires a synapse
I fall upon the wooden floor
And that's dream 1644.
