| THE GREAT CATHOLIC TRADITION | ||||||||
| The Great Catholic Tradition, whose componet parts are the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Roman Communion, and the various Old Catholic and National Catholic churches, is characterized by three things; 1. three tiered ordained ministry, 2. liturgical prayer life, 3. sacramental spirituality. Each shall be explained below: 1. The three tiered ordained ministry of the Catholic Tradition consists of Bishops ordained in apostolic succession, Priests, and Deacons. Bishops may be given various honorary titles such as Archbishop, Metropolitan or Patriarch. Priests may also be given honorary titles such as Monsignor, Protopriest and Archpriest. Deacons too have their honorary titles such as Protodeacon and Archdeacon. 2. The liturgical prayer life of the Catholic Tradition centers principly on the celebration of Holy Communion called by various titles the three most common being Holy Eucharist, Mass, and Divine Liturgy. Also the day is traditionally divided into periods known as "hours" (not necessarily the hours of the secular clock) with a corresponding prayer service . 3. The sacramental prayer life refers to both the Sacraments or Mysteries consisting of Holy Eucharist, Baptism. Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Holy Orders, Confession/Repentance, and Holy Unction/Annointing of the Sick. It also refers to various devotion items such as prayerbooks and prayerbeads that help one to center his/her life on the Risen Lord. |
