| A
hamsters cage should really be placed in a room that will be quiet during
the day so that they can get some sleep. The cage shouldn't be
placed near any draughts as the hamster could become ill from the cold
air, it also shouldn't be placed near a radiator or near a window that
gets the hot sun on it. You should buy as big a cage as you can, as hamsters love to exercise and need as much room as possible. You should supply the cage with a food bowl, a drinking bottle and the items that I mentioned were in Ash's cage above. You shouldn't really buy a hamster a round cage as this can cause the hamster to be disorientated and could send them 'mad', hamsters need corners! Before you go out and buy your hamster you will first need to set up the cage. You should wash out the cage, adding a few drops of disinfectant (made for rodent cages), once it has dried you then add the wooden shavings. I recommend you use pine or aspen shavings and not cedar, as cedar is a smelly wood and can sometimes be too intense for small hamsters. You will need to clean the cage out once a week. You will also need to supply bedding material for the hamster to snuggle up in, I personally recommend shredded paper that you can buy in most pet stores, DO NOT use fluffy bedding as this can get stuck in the hamsters pouches. Then add all your items to the cage (food bowl, drinking bottle, wheel etc.) and hey presto! a nice home for your hamster. |
