Welcome to Dreamcast Magic
Here we will supply you with the most up to date essential news on the Dreamcast.
Its the big question on every ones mind, is PSO for the Dreamcast over?  The answer is no, only 2/3 of the original Dreamcast PSO servers for the world are still online.  While a US copy of PSO will not even allow you to connect to the server listings, the European and Japanese versions of the game are fully functional.  As of the time (3/15/04) both Sega of Japan and Europe have both confirmed no move to shutdown their PSO servers at the time.  The following are questions that people may have about importing PSO.  If after reading this and you still have questions, e-mail us at [email protected] and one of our PSO experts will answer you questions.  All of the following info is based on info discovered by the DreamcastMagic team not from message boards, rumors or assumptions.

Q: Can I play a US copy of PSO (1 and/or 2)online?

A: No, as of October 1, 2003 Sega of America closed its servers.  Rumors had been floating around for weeks but one one believed both version would be taken offline, because you had to play a monthly fee to play V2.  The reason given was because the dropping popularity of the Dreamcast versions.  There is a hacker run home brew server is online (for more info Click Here) that can be accessed with a US copy.

Q: Can I play a Japanese copy of PSO (1 and/or 2) online?

A: No, the only way you can play a Japanese version of PSO is by obtaining a Dricas/Isao ID. People used to use a program called Chabsign to create the ID's, then they could use that IDs to purchase their Hunters License. Up to Feb '03 Isao offered what was known as "Kids Course" which allowed kids under the age of 18 ten hours of free access a month. It came with an Isao ID for gaming (and Chabsign). Now the "Kids Course" is still offered, but at a reduced rate. Which means you must sign up for a paid Isao account.

Isao (obviously) didn't track or worry about Chab accounts, since the "Kids Course" was renewable, from month to month. Now, since it's all pay, those accounts get deleted off the server if they don't match up with new paid accounts. In short you have to sign up with Isao as your ISP just to get the ID to buy a HL which can't be done outside of Japan.

Q: Is it free to play the European copy of PSO (1 and/or 2) online?

A: Yes and both versions are free!

Q: Can I play a used European copy of PSO (1 and/or 2) online?

A: Yes, you can use a used copy online however you will need to e-mail Sega Europe at
[email protected] with the PSO serial codes, explaining to them you got a 2nd hand copy of the game and they will reset them off the server for you and you'll be able to register those codes to your Dreamcast.

Q: I hear that it a European copy of PSO will not read the internet info inputted from a Planet Web browser is that true?

A: No, the European copy of PSO reads ISP info saved to your Dreamcast by any Planet Web browsers.  In addition, V2 comes with a copy of Dreamkeys 3.0 web browser.

Q: Can I use my US PSO character on a European copy of PSO?

A: No, it will report to you that the file is corrupted and will not load. You will be forced to start a new character. But you can transfer characters saved from US ver. 1 to the European ver. 2. This is because you are allowed to transfer your characters saved with ver. 1 to ver. 2 anyway and is the only way to get around this problem.

Q: If I buy a European copy of PSO ver. 2 will I need ver. 1 serials, if I used to play PSO ver. 1 on my system?

A: Yes, if you choose to buy a European copy of PSO ver. 2 and have played a copy of PSO ver. 1, on that same system it will ask for the serials of the first game. The European copy of PSO ver. 2 will not accept US PSO ver. 1 serials. The way to solve this problem is to reset your Dreamcasts internal memory. Its easy and simple, all you do is get Planet Web browser 1.0 and plug a single controller into port B and hold buttons B and X while turning on the system. Continue to hold them until the web browser's login screen appears. Also the time and date, ISP and PSO serial info will all be lost.

Q: Where can I buy a European copy of PSO?

A: Importing games from Europe can be very difficult and hard, Ebay is the only place you can find Pal PSO versions.
Click here go to the Ebay Store (one of the only) that sell both versions new for a reasonable price.

Q: Is it really worth getting PSO for the Dreamcast and not for the Xbox or Gamecube?

A: Yes, it's worth it in many ways.  First you pay no monthly fees like the newer versions of the same game.  You don't need to buy a new system and you don't have to waste even more on the game it self which sells for much more then the European versions.

Q: Will I need a boot disk to play this?

A: Like all imports you must have a boot disk or mod chip installed to play it.  If you want to be sent a free boot disk by e-mail then simple contact
us, its only a 0.6 Mb file.  Also using the popular Utopia boot disk will cause some in-game problems for people using it, we recommend using one of the many others.

Q: I have never imported a game before will I be able to do this with out getting lost?

A: Yes, everything you need to play the game online is the game and boot disk. Its easy and simple.

Q: Is that true someone started a petition to save the US Dreamcast PSO server?

A: Yes, Dreamcast Magic launched a massive effort into trying to save the US server. DCM got many well know sites to post the news about the petition like
PSO World, Consol Vision, Shin Force and Phantasy-Star.  But in the end Sega didn't even reply to are e-mails to them about the petition, which is extremely rude to say the least.

Q: Im new to PSO whats the game about?

A: We have done complete review of both versions of the game, located in our
reviews section.
