| Welcome to Dreamcast Magic |
| Note: these pictures are in low resolution and the game looks much better on a TV. |
| Story: 8/10 The characters all have different motives for seeking the SoulEdge, and you have to admit that Namco did a great job at providing the players with accurate information on the characters. You have the possibility to unlock all you would ever want to know about them. The characters have separate endings with nice artworks. The story is very similar to the first game, probably because many characters are returning (Siegfried, Mitsurugi, Taki, Rock, Voldo, Sophitia, Hwang, Seung Mina and Edge Master). Graphics: 10/10 Breathtaking! That's all I can say! Each movement is fluid and lifelike, the weapons shine and reflect with amazing detail. Plus each combo is fully customizable, meaning that you can interrupt a vertical-vertical combo with a kick, and there will be no frame skipping of any kind! The characters look almost as good Shenmues and they are very realistic, so much taht the hair flows in the air like its real has you move. Sound: 9/10 The sound of each weapon being wielded, the way each one connects, and the screams and groans of each fighter. They're...they're...perfect! Well almost, first of all, the announcer does get rather repetitive. Second, some English dubs, rather than having to read subtitles would also be better. Also music would have been better with tecno to the classical music you hear. Controls: 8/10 The beauty of Soul Calibur is that button mashers and more technical gamers can both enjoy this game. While it is possible to beat the game by just randomly hitting the attack buttons, the gamers who take time to learn all techniques and moves will definitely have the upper hand. Some of the advanced techniques include escaping from throws and performing a guard impact. A guard impact successfully stops an attack, and briefly stuns the opponent. Another move is the soul charge. This increases the damage you can deal temporarily, unfortunately this tactic is mainly ineffective due to the amount of time youre left defenseless while charging up.You can even use an arcade stick to emulate that original arcade feel! Plus, with the trigger buttons, you can power-up your character without having to do any special button combos! But it will take you some time to get to know your characters combo's. Game Play / Replay Value: 9/10 With your standard modes, such as Arcade, Versus, Training, and Survival, what more could you want? How about a Quest Mode what you do is fight battles under various conditions, and earn credits to buy artwork. As you earn more artwork, new features, such as demonstration theater, extra characters, and hidden costumes, will be unlocked. It's enough to keep anyone coming back for more! Overall: 9/10 Soul Calibur definitely strikes a smashing blow to people who say the Dreamcast looks bad with amazing graphics, excellent controls, and a variety of modes which will definitely leave a big impression on the "soul of the Dreamcast"!
