| Article of the Month: Games that Never Saw the Light (Part 2) (Nov - Dec) |
| In this months article I will discuss games that because Sega going 3rd party and stopping Dreamcast production never saw the light of day. The reasons vary from fearing low sales; poor quality to 9/11 but one thing is the same, they were never released. Page: 1 , 2 , 3 Baldur's Gate Baldur's Gate is the critically acclaimed online RPG for the PC. Baldur's Gate is a near-perfect adaptation of the classic tabletop, role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Six separate races and eight core character classes, from which the player can create a completely original character, are available. The game world is well painted, and players are free to explore this wonderfully textured game environment in any way they see fit, all against the backdrop of a thoughtfully conceived and versatile plot. You begin the game as a young orphan living with your stepfather within the safe confines of a scholarly community. It is a happy and idyllic life until your stepfather is killed and it becomes clear that you are intended to be next. You, as the young protagonist, then set out to discover just what kind of a mess you're in. During the adventure, you recruit a number of personable allies, battle foes, delve into dungeons, trek across wilderness, solve puzzles, and complete a plethora of epic quests that are seamlessly sown into the fabric of the overall plot. The story line unfolds in response to your choices to reveal your character's true identity as well as the nature and motive of your enemies. Sega sources hinted that Baldur's Gate would have been the first title to fully utilize the online capabilities of Dreamcast. But why was it cancelled: The problems really became when Sega took up the port themselves from Bioware Corp to both help speed up the process and prevent any delay in Bioware's other projects, most notably the upcoming action shooter, MDK 2. The title was to be published by Sega and was scheduled to be one of the Dreamcast's first online RPGs. However, Sega dropped the ball by announcing that the game will not be released. Sega gave no reasons as to why Baldur's Gate was cancelled, and all we can do is speculate. Is this because of network problems? High development costs? Poor sales projections? Whatever the reason, fans who had hoped to get their Baldur's Gate fix on the Dreamcast were disappointed. The following are pictures from the game: |
