Veteran D Ulf Samuelsson announces retirement TORONTO (Ticker) -- Ulf Samuelsson, one of the NHL's hardest hitting and nastiest players, officially announced his retirement on Monday. A 16-year defenseman, Samuelsson played for five teams and helped the Pittsburgh Penguins win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. He was honored as a member of the Penguins' Millennium Team during Saturday's game against the New Jersey Devils. Samuelsson, who turns 37 in March, last played for the Philadelphia Flyers in 1999-2000 and officially announced his retirement through the NHL Players' Association. "Hockey has been really good to me and my family," he said. "We have spent time in some great cities and have made a lot of friends along the way. I'm now excited to move on to the real world and try my luck there. Last, but not least, I would like to thank the many fans for their support throughout my career. It really meant a lot to me." A native of Sweden, the 6-1, 195-pounder appeared in a total of 1,080 NHL games and recorded 57 goals and 275 assists along with 2,453 penalty minutes.
